Free Music Review: Hooked again on Hootie
Hit: 4 Stars

and their latest record. For anyone on the fence about whether or not to get this album should hop on down and get to their local record store (or on-line, it's cheaper) and pick up "scattered, smothered, and covered". Listening to this album is like being in on a private jam session with the band, much like it was during a Hootie show in the early days. The sound is very lose and their renditions of these "covers" are completely new and original. The liner notes (I'm betting where written by Mark) are smart and helpful in disecting the songs as you listen. My faves on the album are: Let Me Be Your Man, I'm Over You, Gravity Of the Situation, and Use Me. Too bad their first ever recording "I Don't Understand" never made to a pressed cd. One day. Keep doing what your doing fellas.

Free Music Review: Something the fans deserved!
Hit: 4 Stars

Finally, a collection of the stuff that for whatever reason, didn't make the original albums, or wound up scattered (get the title now?) over various soundtracks or import versions of the albums...all in one place. The band has been doing 54-40's "I Go Blind" for years. in fact it was recorded back during the Cracked Rear View sessions...appeared on the Friends TV soundtrack...Use Me has been a concert tune for a long time too...nice to see these and all the other songs together that up until this album have been a case of get 'em where you can find 'em. Thanks guys...and thanks for continuing to be consistently excellent...for those of you who STILL (!) aren't familiar with these guys, get their new Best Of collection...and this one...then go out and grab Cracked Rear View...and then the rest of 'em!

Free Music Review: A fine job at proving a band's longevity
Hit: 4 Stars

This album stands as second only to Cracked Rear View. Their debut album, which flew off the shelves and earned them a grammy as well as a platinum record, earned a perfect 5-stars in my book. This surpasses Musical Chairs for the second-place spot on my shelf. Fairweather Johnson, which was a bit disappointing for a sophomore album, would take a distant 4th. Simply put: This one's better than both Musical Chairs and Fairweather Johnson, but it will take Thriller-like creativity to surpass the success of Cracked Rear View. Die-hard fans should buy this, but people on the borderline NEED to hear this album. It proves that not everything they play sounds alike, that the band can expand their horizons and do it surprisingly well.

Free Music Review: A solid piece of work
Hit: 4 Stars

I must admit that I'm a bit dense and the title for the latest Hootie offering didn't clue me in to the fact that it was going to be a compilation of B-sides and covers. Didn't care all that much, as I was just excited to have new music from them and bought it without even looking at the song list. As soon as "Fine Line" started to play during the drive home I knew that it was going to be another great albumn. The CD is excellent from end to end with pleasant surprises like their cover of "Driver 8" and "Gravity Of The Situation." The trademark vocals, harmony, and flawless rythym are present everywhere and this is yet another example of why this band has managed to be sucessfull.

Free Music Review: Hootie Does No Wrong
Hit: 4 Stars

The first time I saw Hootie and the Blowfish was in 1993 when I was a freshman at USC and they played a frat party I went to - I was completely hooked! They continue to be my favorite band! Darius has the most amazing and distinct voice - I can't get enough. The only reason this rating isn't 5 stars is because they didn't record my favorite 2 cover songs they used to do (maybe it's a copyright thing) --> "Mustang Sally" and "Love the One You're With." But I can't complain too much - this whole album is a treat!
