Anyone who loves Racmaninoff would adore listening to his best Sonata played exquisitely by the best in the business and a personal friend of the composer. Monteux conducting Stravinsky's "Fire Bird" suite also understood exactly what the composer wanted from his music. Too bad it's not available! Jeez! So much great music and so little on CD. Pity!

Yes, Virginia, Rach 3 existed before David Helfgott and Shine. Vladimir Horowitz made a recording in 1951 that continues to be the delight and despair of every pianist, notwithstanding standard cuts and minor, nerve-induced inaccuracies. The 1980 Second Sonata is looser but no less intense than Horowitz's storied 1968 CBS version, while the short pieces ooze with sex: even the Polka! --Jed DistlerClassical Music CDs
