Free Music Review: YAAAAAY--I HAVE THE COMPLETE SERIES 5 Stars
Yes, that was very dorky for me to say, but if you're half the music fan that I am, you'll understand where I'm coming from when it comes to owning certain "rare" CDs such as "Hotel Costes" especially in the "Dirty Souf" where all you're exposed to is top 40 BS and rap music. I have searched high and low for "Etage" and to my surprise found it today on my lunch break in Borders (thanx, Val!). Of course I had the exact amount of the CD in my wallet, and once again trying to ponder if I needed gas, lunch money or music the most, I went ahead and got...AHHHHHHH...the CD! I know, I know...I have a serious problem...Besides, it was the only copy in the store. At any rate, after struggling with trying to find the CD in the puzzle-of-a-jacket it was housed in, I was shocked to find this volume of "Hotel Costes" more impressive than all the others. The latin music as found in abundance on Volume 1 and "Quartre" is very minimal here, and the grooves have a consistency and a head-bobbing effect like no other disc I own. Once again Mixmaster Stephane Pompougnac has brought us great music with mass appeal and flava. You'll hardly find a dead moment on "Etage", nor will you bore with it quickly. The entire CD outshines its predecessors and successors, and I'm forced to reconsider now which one is my favorite Costes CD. "Etage" is lush and provocative with a hint of mystique--runway models, spy movies, midnight rendevous and long drives in the country come to mind when you listen to this baby...Now that I own all volumes of the Costes series, maybe I'll sit down somewhere and actually give myself time to enjoy them--that is, until Volume six comes out--which should be later this year! Since Pschent started the Costes series any old half-trendy restaurant has started releasing its 'downtempo' compilation. The covers all show someone on a sofa, the tracklistings all look the same, and the music is just plain boring. With Costes however we try to make sure that they are always fresh, interesting, the packaging is great (check out the inside of Etage 3).
