Free Music Notes for Vol. 6-Hotel Costes
Free Music Review: COSTES 6 TOPS THEM ALL!!!!

Stephane Pompougnac has done it again, with his seamless mixing and brilliant music selections on the world-famous Hotel Costes series! This time with more consistency, originality and the usual worldly flavor he is known for mixing together. Costes 6 starts out on a very good note with Slow Train's "In the Black of Night" with its funky laid-back beat and raw vocals from who sounds like N'Dambi, former Erykah Badu back-up singer, mixing effortlessly into the sultry-cool, "Reality Check" by Stigmato Inc. (???). Next is the swanky "Metropolitan" from Emmanuel Santarromana, that merges into the groovy "Surround Me With Your Love" by some group called 3-11 Porter (???). Then there's Tosca's brilliant, bass-driven, "Rolf Royce" which features Stephan Grashadi, the only familiar song/group on Costes 6. And what Hotel Costes set would be complete without the addition of one of Stephane Pompougnac's very own songs, the bossa nova-ish, "Morenito"--which is much different than what I'm accustomed to hearing from Pompougnac, but it works and sounds good all the same, with hypnotic vocals from somebody named Clementine. The pace picks up on Costes 6 with the dancefloor-friendly "Got To Be In Love" by Barbara Mendes. Minus 8's "Snowblind" provides some jazzy 2-Step with a twist, while Dutch Rhythm Combo's super-funky "Come On" with hot vocals from Annik (???) takes the party to another level. Fingathing's haunting "You Fly Me" is on point, despite it's short duration of 2:52. Latin/Samba lovers will be highly impressed with Spiro Projecto's "Blueless." Pompougnac keeps things jumpin' with the housey "Breeze Is Black" by Zimpala and Grand Palace's classy, "Party's On." He closes out with some sophisticated D&B from Dr. Jazz's Universal Remedy "Un Monde Sans Frime!" A truly impressive CD...much better than all the others, and the artists, despite their anonymity, are superlative! Which goes to show you that there are some excellent songs and muscians in the world--it just takes a great producer/mixer/DJ like Stephane Pompougnac to find them and mix it all together. A+++++++ on this one, SP...can't wait for your CD to drop on November 4--it should be as equally impressive as your work on Hotel Costes!

Another installment, by Stephane Pompougnac, in the exciting yet laid-back electro compilation series. Artists include Slow Train, Stigmatoinc., Emmanuel Santarromana, 3-11 Porter, & Tosca. Digibox. 14 tracks. Wagram. 2003.Stéphane Pompougnac's Hôtel Costes series gets a boost on its sixth installment, mixing in a bit more grit with the pretty ambience and silky beats. Actually, "grit" isn?t quite accurate; Pompougnac?s musical choices still lean heavily toward the cool, classy lounge of Jean-Louis Costes? famous Parisian hotel/club. But bits of urban groove and subdued jungle rhythms are present as well. Tosca?s druggy "Rolf Royce" (from Delhi9) mines a simple, slap-bass line like a Happy Mondays outtake, while Minus 8 makes a jazzy, beautiful mess out of "Snowblind." Unlike past efforts, Costes 6 gets better as it goes, wrapping with the d&b-meets-French-chanteuse clatter of "Un Monde Sans Frime." Like slightly uncouth, yet good-natured guests, these new Hôtel residents might not be as fashionable, but they?re still the best things about the joint. --Matthew Cooke
