Free Music Notes for Little Shop Of Horrors: Original Cast Album (1982 Off-Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Excellent cast recording released on a cheapjack label
Hit: 4 Stars

As you know, Decca Broadway are notorious for castrating cast recordings. This is rather unfortunate, since Little Shop is my favorite show, and I play Bernstein in my show that's running at my school as of yesterday. That being said, this is an excellent cast recording and has an incredibly talented cast, the highlight being Mushnik!

As I mentioned before, this does cut out quite a bit- Call Back In the Morning and Somewhere That's Green are both M.I.A (although Sominex/Suppertime II does make for an excellent lead in to Don't Feed The Plants). Also the first few bits of "Mushnik and Son" and the Bernstein's dialogue amd Mrs. Luce bits of "The Meek Shall Inherit" are missing- MSI just has "Seymour Krelborn, Sweetie Honey Baby Pussycat" and then just goes to "Hey Seymour Krelborn you prince you". And M&S begins at "Seymour... how would you like to be my son?".

Anyways, great soundtrack, but be aware that it's incomplete. Typical of Decca Broadway though...

Free Music Review: Great show- but casting could've been better...
Hit: 4 Stars

I first heard this particular recording about a year ago when we were beginning to block a production of it. As a vocalist, I take issue with quite a bit of the casting, and I have to concur with another reviewer: this Seymour lacks the "lovable loser" angst that makes him a sympathetic character. One good thing about this recording, though, is that it's much more faithful to the music and plot of the stage version as opposed to the movie. Ellen Greene is outstanding, as always, and the Ronettes are pretty darn spiffy. If you're getting ready to be in this show and the only thing you've seen is the 1986 movie, you REALLY, REALLY need to give this a listen.

Free Music Review: Influential Score!
Hit: 4 Stars

"Little Shop Of Horrors" opened Off-Broadway in 1982 and had an amazing run of five-plus years.

Despite not reaching Broadway until recently, the show's score was quite influential (esp. "Hairspray") has been performed countless times in local productions.

Best tracks include:

Prologue (Little Shop Of Horrors)
Skid Row (Downtown)
Somewhere That's Green
Feed Me (Get It)
Suddenly, Seymour

Terrific cd! ... though the ending is very different from the movie version.

Free Music Review: Great music, unnecessary omissions
Hit: 4 Stars

I must say that I loved loved LOVED the play when I saw it and just had to run out and buy the soundtrack. I like the original cast CD better than the movie soundtrack because it includes two of my favorite songs, "Mushnik and Son", and "Don't Feed the Plants. I was a little disappointed that Audrey's death song, a reprise of "Somwhere that's Green", was cut out, but I got over it. This is a great CD for anyone who likes a little melody. Much like the play, it keeps your toe tapping and your heart pounding.

Free Music Review: An Outrageous Musical Comedy
Hit: 4 Stars

The Roger Korman film is one of the least likely subjects to be made into a musical, but "Little Shop" succeeds because of its catchy score and ability to make the audience feel that they're allowed to laugh at people getting eaten by a giant plant. This musical, which thankfully doesn't take itself too seriously, is a good by. I actually like this CD better than the film's, though Levi Stubbs was a little better than Ron Taylor. I recommend it.
