Free Music Review: a great follow-up on an already good record

Anybody who has read my positive review of Howie Beck's previous record ("Hollow") can actually take and apply that to this self-titled follow-up effort from 2004, since it has similar qualities, but is even better.
With all the charms & qualities "Hollow" had to offer, it still might have been a tad bit too sentimental for many (just listening to the opener could be somewhat depressing) and "Howie Beck" replaces that with a more upbeat & diverse approach (there's even some Bossa Nova & Banjos on this record), while still retaining the dark undercurrent in his lyrics and the intimacy of a "bedroom recording" (which "Hollow" essentially was) to a certain degree.
Although there's still a rich vein of melancholy throughout the record, there's a nice change of pace and many details & different instruments that keep the songs from blending into each other. Standout tracks include "Alice", "Sometimes", "Don't be afraid", "My Low", "We Waited" and "Floating". The album also features guest appearances by Ed Harcourt, NADA SURF'S Matthew Caws and fellow Canadian Leslie Feist.
