Free Music Review: Simple and Soulful, Fun and Funky!

Upon hearing the first few notes of "We're Not Here For A Long Time (We're Here For A Good Time)", the opening track from "PLAN B", Huey Lewis & the News' first CD of all-new material in a little over a decade, I grew a little concerned. Sure, it was a nice enough song, but it was nothing they hadn't already done over the past twenty years or so. Had the boy's time come and gone? Were they old-hat?!? No way! By the time you segue into the second track, the soul-drenched "My Other Woman", you know something special is happening. All phat horns and swinging beat, Lewis seems more at ease - and at home! - than he has in years! The right-on groove continues with "I Ain't Perfect." This R&B flavored rocker could just as easily fit on a Robert Cray or John Hiatt release, what with it's pulsing rhythm section, stinging guitar and sparkling keyboards, but instead it's on "PLAN B"......and that's right where it belongs! Next we have "When I Write The Book." This Rockpile classic has always been considered one of the group's signature songs......and covering signature songs is usually next to impossible. Mind you, I said usually; Huey and the boys do it here in fine form. With it's loping horns and funky organ, it seems like a fresh original. If you didn't know this was a cover you would probably swear the group had just written the song to fit in along side all the other gems on "PLAN B." Now might be as good a time as any to make special note of the horn arrangements that dominate, but never overpower, the CD. Full, fresh and funky, they add a depth and color to the disc that is sorely missing from most of today's releases. Next up is the CD's emotional core, the lovely "I'm Not In Love Yet", a duet with Wynonna. This smooth, silky ballad crosses a number of genres, with touches of pop, R&B and country. Lewis has never sounded so assured, while Ms. Judd is sultry.... If he's ever so inclined, Huey might consider a duet album as a side project; between Wynonna here and Gwenyth Paltrow last year, he's proven he's got the chops for such an endeavor. Next up is "Thank You #19", with it's blistering guitar work and soaring backing vocals, and the CD's title track, a joyous rave-up. From here the CD takes a quirky turn....."The Rhythm Ranch" is a funky, percussive, Bruce Hornsby-esque rocker, all clattering beats and sweaty, hip-shaking horns, tinkling piano and oh-so-smooth vocals, while the CD's first single, the sweet "Let Her Go And Start Over" is a ballad that allows Lewis to be meloncholy without being maudlin. Next up is "I Never Think About You", a blues-drenched number that instantly transports you to a small, smokey club. Lewis seems so comfortable singing this sort of modern torch song that you could swear it's all he's been doing for the last thirty years, versus letting it just occassionally color his standard rock fare. Wrapping up the CD is "So Little Kindness", a pulsating rocker. Starting out slow and easy, it builds in intensity, ending the CD on a powerful, vibrant, full-blown note. It's that note that, in retrospect, resounds throughout "PLAN B." After a (much too) long absence, Huey Lewis and the News are back.......and they're better than ever!!

Disarming frontman Huey Lewis is still turning out the same affable, effortless, pasteurized pop that he did when the band dominated the charts in the '80s, and his crack band plays with precision. The only difference is that instead of pining for a new drug, regaling listeners with those wry little cultural snapshots like "Hip to Be Square," or complaining about "Working for a Living," this collection of 10 original tunes (and a cover of Nick Lowe's "When I Write the Book") is an examination of relationships. Not the redeeming "Power of Love" that Lewis extolled in 1982, but the self-conscious ebb and flow of a long romance as it unravels. Songs like the discouraging "Let Her Go and Start Over" and the quirky "My Other Woman" throw a dim light on ardor and attachment. Even the album's standout track, "I'm Not in Love Yet" (a duet with the wondrously gritty-voiced Wynonna Judd) finds both parties hedging their bets. But you shouldn't. This is a strong collection of songs that elevates the band from being just another '80s retread, and also proves that Plan A is still working fine. --Jaan Uhelszki
