Free Music Notes for Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo)Free Music Review: Okay release, but a slight disappointment if you ask me Hit: 4 Stars
I bought my copy of this CD during the late summer of this past year, and I must say it has turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. However, I allowed my lady friend, Emily, to borrow it during her visit to my area -- back in October -- and she has been hooked on it from the beginning! I offered to give it to her, but she refused to take mine. So, in turn I got her a copy of it for Christmas this year -- in addition to "Fore!", which is one of my top favorite Huey Lewis albums of all time!
The reason why I am disappointed with the album overall is because most of the big hits here are the single versions -- which are edited!! When it comes to listening to Huey Lewis & the News, or any of my favorite groups for that matter, I prefer the full-length LP versions of my top favorite songs. The only time I like a single version is when it is a remix version, which was redone for the better -- such as the single remix edition of "1-2-3", by Gloria Estefan -- and only then will I accept it.
When I first discovered that most of the hits I like were edited versions of the originals, I became utterly disappointed. However, "The Power of Love" is the same version I've always liked to this day, and the same goes for "Heart & Soul", "If This is It", and "Do You Believe In Love?". Emily's favorites on this album are two of the four aforementioned songs above, in addition to "The Heart of Rock & Roll" and "Crusin'". She likes the latter, because on our first big date together I brought along the CD in my Mustang, and I played the album for her all the way through. "Crusin'" is the song that pretty much describes our outing for that day, even though it was originally featured in a recent movie. Anyway, I wish I could say that my Mustang is a 5.0-litre convertible -- but it is only a 2.3-litre, 4-cylinder hardtop. Too bad, huh?
Anyway, for those of you who are like me and prefer the full-length LP versions of Huey Lewis's music, then I would not reccomend this album to any of you. Sorry, Mr. Lewis (with all due respect), but your best hit collection release so far is still "Time Flies" from 1996 -- at least in MY opinion. Anyway, I am also thinking about ordering another copy of that release, because my last 'girlfriend' (and I say that, because she turned out to be a phoney) kept it for herself. When she borrowed it from me in 2003, after we broke up I never got it back from her. Besides, I miss having the LP version of "The Heart of Rock & Roll".
Don't get me wrong, folks, but this latest hit collection by Huey Lewis is not all THAT bad, as indicated here by the 4-star rating. Aside from the edited versions of the Huey classics, there are also several other hits I enjoy on this album -- such as the live version of "Trouble In Paradise", originally featured on "USA For Africa: We Are The World", and released back in 1985. I also like "Back in Time", from "Back to the Future", also released in 1985. Both of these songs have been favorites of mine since I got my original copy of "Time Flies" and an import album called "The Heart of Rock & Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis & the News". The latter album also features the edited versions of the classic hits, aside from "Heart & Soul", "If This Is It", and "The Power of Love". I admit that before I bought that latter album, I failed to recognize the edited versions of selected tracks. I still have it today, though, but mainly for collector's purposes.
For those of you who don't have a problem with the edited versions of Huey Lewis's classic hits, then this album would not be all that bad. I intend to keep mine anyway, because I still have yet to watch the DVD videos on it. I've een without a working DVD player since early on last year, and have not had time or money to see about getting another one for myself. I have also been looking at ordering an NEC DVD burner for my home PC. Anyway, folks, that's all for now. Take care.
Best Regards,
Russell
Free Music Review: This Is It Hit: 4 Stars
There are often times where a good group can have a mediocre greatest hits record. And, there are other times where a better greatest hits record by a guily pleasure group can be just down the road. That has been the story with Huey Lewis & The News recently. Back in 1996 they had a good, but not completely over the top hits record with Time Flies. Although the record was good, there just could've been a whole lot more that should've been highlighted. Now, there is a new decade, and a better chance to hear this great guilty pleasure from the 80's in action all over again, on a new greatest hits record.
Huey Lewis & The News 2006 Greatest CD & DVD combo delivers as well as the regular-priced edition of this great 80's group. The collection includes a lot of great tracks that've been restrored and remastered from its original format well. The compilation includes so many great cuilty pleasure songs like If This Is It, Doing It All For My Baby, The Power of Love from Back To The Future, their breakout hit Do You Believe In Love, Stuck With You, and other great tracks. The collection adds on the feeling by showcasing tracks that were overlooked before from Time Flies like Hip To Be Square, Small World, and Jacob's Ladder. This edition also adds on the great classics by featuring a DVD compilation of some of the groups best videos like The Power Of Love, and Bad Is Bad which sadly was the only track that was overlooked on the CD where it was delivered on DVD.
All in all, Huey Lewis & The News Greatest is a welcomed edition to your record collection for anybody who loves the music of the 80's, or for anyone who has missed the Soul and Pop that this group brought from the 80's. I absolutely suggest this delightful record, and this is really it.

Free Music Review: Decent song solection BUT weak video selection and quality Hit: 4 Stars
First off, I am a huge Huey Lewis and the News fan and was lucky enough to have seen them "back in the day" as a $5 bar band in the SF Bay Area. Although thought of as a pop band and dismissed and panned by many in the music business, HLN were and still are an excellent rock and roll band. They always put on a great show and Huey Lewis, himself, is a class gentleman. They certainly belong in the R&R Hall of Fame in my opinion.
That said, the DVD portion of this release is dreadful. There are numerous omissions such as "Back In Time" and "Some Of My Lies Are True" and "Perfect World". What is even worse is the quality of the video. I made a better copy of my HLN Video Hits using my VHS to DVD recorder! Whomever was in charge of the video portion should not pass go and not collect $200 for their work.
All in all, one can only hope for some great old stuff to get released like the live New Year's show from Japan and the remastered Video Hits collection. Thank goodness for my video to DVD recorder! If you are a true HLN fan, you have all the songs but wanted the DVD (like me). Sadly, you will be disappointed in the video quality but it is the only one out there so don't watch it on a HDTV!!

Free Music Review: Huey Lewis & the News: Greatest Hits & Videos Hit: 4 Stars
Great music for me since 1982 when I first heard their tunes from the "Picture This" release. The CD brings back good feelings and the DVD makes me laugh at their humor to their songs. But, I don't know if the DVD is made as it is when I make a SINGLE selection to play a certain video-song. It plays all songs the same as selecting PLAY. Although I am happy to see the video of "Do You Believe In Love." I still miss "Do You Love Me Like You Say You Do" and their original "Workin' For A Livin'" videos. It is only why I scale 4 stars. Thank you Amazon.com and Huey Lewis & the News!
