Free Music Notes for Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim FerrerFree Music Review: Highest Praises Hit: 5 Stars
This extraordinary artist was unknown until an American musician named Ry Cooder, made a pilgrimage to Cuba with his son to find all of the still-living Cuban musician legends. Ibrahim Ferrer had given up on his musical career, as he could not get work in Cuba. Ry Cooder and son found Ibrahim and a host of other Cuban musicians, and went to Cuba's recording studio where they recorded the "Buena Vista Social Club" cd (highly recommend). Ibrahim and friends played at Carnegie Hall, which launched a new career for him. I can also recommend Ibrahim Ferrer's "Buenos Hermanos" cd. This music goes straight to the heart and expresses a joy unfelt in any other type of music.
Free Music Review: wonderful Hit: 5 Stars
I wasn't a Ry Cooder fan but I've discovered respect for him after these associations. Previous posters seem to think that Ry Cooder was the only guitarist, which would be a surprise to Manuel Galban. Ibrahim's voice is as amazing as his story. BVSC the film is basically a film of the sessions for this album. I think Ry deserves 'props' for bringing this music to a much wider audience than was expected. I'm sure people will read that as a 'whiter' audience as well. Lighten up, shake off the ghost and dance.
I would also like to mention that the production on this and the other BVSC is incredible, much better than other productions of modern latin music.
Free Music Review: Great singer Hit: 5 Stars
This guy has an amazing voice and remarkable control; for anyone, not considering his age. Of course he IS singing tunes that he sang in the 50s, so some of them are a little lounge-lizardy, but some of them are just great. He was famous for the son and for good reason. On those pieces he's outstanding. He never sings anything the same twice, while floating above a complex rhythmic background with repeating bass line and periodic interjections from a vocal trio. I got three of his CDs at the same time and listened to nothing else for about three weeks. He's a master; but his stuff.
Free Music Review: The Best of the Lot Hit: 5 Stars
This was the first one I listened to (of the BVSC series or the indivduals that comprised the group) and it probably is the best of the lot. This is very good music. You actually get the sense that they are making the music for the pleasure they get from it. They aren't looking for some kind of hit, just music they have enjoyed, in the hope that you too will get some pleasure from it.My personal favourites? It's a toss up between "Bruca Manigua" and "Guanteque Campesino". Awesome ... you know when it is so good you tear up just a little bit ...?
