Something Wicked This Way Comes(1998). Iced Earth's Fifth Album.
In 1998, bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn were the most popular bands in Modern Rock, so, music was in the dumps. Although, if you look past the commercial aspect of music and dig deeper, such as in 90's Power Metal(which remains popular in Europe), you can find some of the strongest music ever put to record. Examples of this are Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Stratovarius, Nevermore, Yngwie Malmsteen, and The Scorpions. Iced Earth, while being unknown to the general public, remains a constant force in heavy metal and thrash, getting huge support from their fans and critics, changing and evolving their sound with each consecutive album. With their previous two records, 'Dark Saga' and 'Burnt Offerings', Iced Earth experimented with Death Metal and Black Metal, which either bothered or enhanced fans' opinions of the band. Whatever your distinction, Iced Earth came back in 1998 with 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', a burgeoning mix of ballads and headbanging rockers, ranging from Power Metal to out-right Thrash. So, was I happy or saddened with the results? Read on to find out!
Track Ratings-
Burning Times- Upon first listen, "Burning Times" immediately came out of my speakers with the ferocity of Metallica's "For Whom The Bells Toll", and the song even had the same bell noises! Jon Schaffer's headbanging riff and Barlow's deep growl and falsetto scream work wonders here, and how can you not bang your head after his shrieks of "You'd be a SINNER?". Priceless.
Melancholy(Holy Martyr)- Although I'd be the first to get pissed off at a band for including a ballad on their album, Iced Earth is quite the opposite: Bring on the power ballads! Schaffer's enchanting rhythm guitar and Barlow's brooding vocals build up an excellent ballad along the lines of The Scorpions, but when the song gets heavier during the chorus, you'll be amazed. A very "from-the-heart" ballad!
Disciples of the Lie- If you think "Burning Times" was heavy, watch out! "Disciples of the Lie" is a heavy-as-hell, remorseless Thrash song that combines the raw power of Testament and Anthrax and mixed with the pure speed and heaviness of Metallica. Hell, this may be the heaviest song I've ever heard!
Watching Over Me- Another ballad, "Watching Over Me" might just be my favorite on the entire album, blending a tear-jerking mix of Schaffer's melodic acoustic and electric guitar work, but Barlow really shines here, letting out some of the most heart-felt, stirring vocals I've ever heard, especially on the chorus. This song is incomparable to any other band's, see for yourself!
Stand Alone- A melodic thrash song, Iced Earth punishes the listener with incredible loudness and speed, blending an incredible mix of remorseless riffs, angry vocals, magnificent guitar solos, and an incredible backup choir. Imagine Dream Theater with Venom: You might understand the speed, power, loudness, and talent this song contains.
Consequences- After hearing "Burning Times", it's hard to imagine Iced Earth doing a song like "Consequences", an outright ballad about the consequences of greed and power. Schaffer sports a beautiful rhythm guitar melody, while Barlow belts out vocals Justin Timberlake and Usher wish they had. Tarkinson's guitar solos are incredible, and this song really evolves into a heavier song, such as Metallica's "One", that makes for a great listen.
My Own Savior- An angry protest at religion and the world, "My Own Savior" blends an earful of music, sporting a sound not unlike Motorhead on steroids. Barlow and Schaffer hit those notes perfectly, and the chorus is completely mind-numbing.
Reaping Stone- "Reaping Stone" begins kind of eerily, with Barlow's vocals muttering behind a spooky beat, but Schaffer's doomy electric attack on the senses soon erupts out of nowhere, and Barlow picks up to shouts of "Come Into My World Now Child!". Reminds me of a darker version of "Enter Sandman", and the *incredible* musicianship on this track astounds me.
1776- Imagine a song about America's independence, and the sense of power, beauty, and the patriotic message it should convey. Schaffer astounds me.. he manages to blend a song that sounds so strikingly similar to what you'd expect from 1776, with guitar melodies that sound eerily similar to the flutes played during battle and drumming that sounds exactly like the little "drummer boy".
Blessed Are You- Although "Blessed Are You" has a great chorus, not much else happens. See, this is why I don't like ballads! Easily the album's worst track.
Something Wicked Trilogy:
Prophecy- Undoubtedly, the "Something Wicked Trilogy" is the album's highlight, and
"Prophecy" starts it off, using Schaffer's foreboding lyrics to mold a creepy and foreboding song. Pulsating from heavy to melodic, "Prophecy" rushes out with a heavy metal attack on the senses to a Rhythm Guitar melody, and you can't wait to see where the song's going next.
Birth of the Wicked- A much darker song, the sense of foreboding and doom-to-come is gone, replaced with a maniacal triumph that describes the coming of the "wicked" one. Uncomparable to any other band, Iced Earth manages to make the second part seem even better than the first(with their incredible musicianship), but that's until you hear...
The Coming Curse- The final part of the "Something Wicked Trilogy", "The Coming Curse" begins with a soothing, but slightly eerie piano playing. After a minute and a half, Schaffer's punishingly heavy electric guitar riff and Barlow's insane vocals(his depth is amazing) come out to the listener like a rushing train. An amazing song made moreso by the musicianship and songwriting, the "Something Wicked Trilogy" couldn't have ended better.
Overall, 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' is a great Power Metal/Thrash album, sporting equal ballads and metallic rockers, and never failing to disappoint in the musicians department. Barlow..is..incredible! Schaffer and Tarkinson belt out some incredible guitar work, and the "Something Wicked Trilogy" is something to behold. More accessible than their other albums(not to mention one of their best), 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' is perfect for "newbies".
