Free Music Notes for The Christmas CollectionFree Music Review: Multi-lingual, cross-cultural Wizardry Hit: 5 Stars
This reviewer had heard of these guys, but never heard them, assuming them to be just another of the Crowell cookie cutter company's attempts to pander to the populace.
But then
there were Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks, definitely NOT Brittney McStepfords, and I saw Il Divo on Oprah's Christmas show and heard that La Streisand, no less, sang with these guys. So, while out wandering through Christmas shopping up here in the Land of Judy Garland's birth, (Nobody better mess with Judy's Over the Rainbow. Not nobody! Not no how!) I picked up this CD and popped it in the player. Wow! I am in awe! and then along comes their "Over the Rainbow." It was so stunningly beautiful, I had to pull off the road until my tears cleared enough to continue the trek home. Judy herself would be proud.
It's all good - all the tracs here are excellent. This CD will become a Christmas favourite! /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
Free Music Review: My heart, and my tension melted . . . Hit: 5 Stars
Yo quiero mucho mas de IL DIVO. WOW!
I just listened to this album after having fallen in love with their original: IL DIVO. My heart, and my tensions, simply melted away as the voices soared and blended in familiar ways. Theirs is a gift to be treasured and shared, a gift to all. And I believe I can answer the question, "Why on earth did they include 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on a Christmas album?"
Listen with new ears. It's a secular metaphor for the Christmas message: hope for the hopeless, relief for the weary, redemption for those who feel completely lost -- ". . . wish upon a star . . ," You too may find yourself flying "over the rainbow" with the sheer joy of the message and mood as these four incredible singers bring new life to old classics, and usher in the season of Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.
Free Music Review: Wonderful Christmas music! Hit: 5 Stars
One of my favorite CDs this winter has been Il Divo's The Christmas Collection. I really like The Christmas Collection because it's a mix of very traditional Christmas music like O Come All Ye Faithful and less traditional but similarly sounding songs like Over the Rainbow. The whole CD really is beautiful.
I was unfamiliar with Il Divo before I receiving this CD, and I have been pleasantly surprised. I mean, they're no Elmo and Patsy, so you probably won't be singing along. Especially with the parts that aren't in English. Nonetheless, the music is glorious, and the CDs are lovely to listen to.
The Christmas Collection is magnificent. Backed by rich orchestra music, the four men of Il Divo have rich and powerful voices that are a pleasant treat, especially after listening to wining teenagers all day.
Free Music Review: This album is more than you could ever hope for in Christmas music Hit: 5 Stars
It so wonderfully obvious that Il Divo has great respect for the authors of these traditional Christmas songs. There is just a bare hint of their own style in the way they sing each song-as if holding a fragile leaf in their hands with gentle caring and thoughtfullness. Most artists, with the exception of Celine Dion, who "hack up" or belt out songs like these simply trash them and sometimes make them almost unidentifiable or unbearable to listen to. Closing my eyes and listening to Il Divo's renditions of these songs is like drifting on a cloud. This is true with every other song I've had the pleasure of listening to performed by these wonderful gentlemen.
The performance in The Coliseum was beyond words. We are truly blessed to be entertained by Il Divo!
Free Music Review: Awe inspiring, tear producing! Hit: 5 Stars
Before this album, which I bought on purely a whim, I'd only heard a snippet of one of these guys' other songs, but it was enough for me to know a Christmas album would be smashing. Personally, I prefer when they sing together rather than individually, but this album reduced me to tears within seconds. Sometimes one chord is all it takes to produce a musical climax within me! This one hit that chord-repeatedly. I could do without percussion on Ave Maria, but other than that, this is superb.
Reviews I read hadn't mentioned the bonus track, Isabel, which is a variation on Faure's Pavane - I swear this had me involuntarily boo-hooing, which sounds like a bad thing, but it was absolutely cathartic.
