Free Music Notes for EllipseFree Music Review: A new direction for Imogen Heap Hit: 4 Stars
Like her previous albums this one is unique to itself and honestly I didn't like most of it that much. Then, as I listened to it over the first day, it grew on me. The percussive sound is very catchy and the songs do get stuck in my head.
Ellipse as a whole has the same feeling as the song The Walk from Speak for Yourself. Earth, Tidal, Aha, Swoon, and Canvas have a great forward momentum to them that I enjoy, while 2-1 and Half Life have the strong lyrics that make her ballads so great.
The Album is not perfect Between Sheets is by far the weakest song on the album and feels flat and Little Bird feels like she was rushed to get it out and it didn't reach the level it could have. First Train Home, though a great song, is more commercial then the other songs and is almost out of place. However these weakness are overshadowed by the strong lyrics in all the songs as well as the unique instrumentals.
As usual Imogen Heap created an album that is so on the cutting edge of music that it almost falls off (and does in a bad way in Between Sheets). This album is not for everyone but many fans will be pleased and enjoy the direction she is going in. I'm very curious to see what her next album is going to be like and will enjoy Ellipse until I can find out
Free Music Review: Both instant satisfaction and growing on me.... Hit: 4 Stars
I'm probably jumping the gun on this review but have listened to most of the songs more than once. Speak for Yourself grew on me over time and I have a positive feeling about this one. The first song is excellent but derivative sounding as others have said. The one thing that isn't mentioned is the audio minimalism going on through this album. It's sonically a wonderful experience to have subtlety where needed. Doesn't sound like the overly compressed, full on volume of most pop hits even though this is a pop album. I've heard Death Cab for Cutey using this technique in a recent radio hit and I'm hoping it's the wave of the future. MUSIC NEEDS DYNAMICS! Imogen may be showing how wonderful 'radio-ready' songs can be when some fluctuation in dynamics is part of the sound journey. This album is a trip to listen to, buy it! It's definitely girly, sometimes awkward, intimate, but sometimes lacks metaphor. It's hopefully lasting and re-playable(hence the 4 stars maybe/hopefully 5 in the future/reappraisal).
Free Music Review: Ellipse Hit: 4 Stars
`Ellipse' is the long awaited return of Imogen Heap and offers up another album of her unique styling and lush, textured music. From the opening track you know you are in safe hands and you can settle back and enjoy her vocals and song-writing. Stand out tracks for me on first listen are `Wait It Out`, `Between Sheets`, `2-1`, `Aha!', `Canvas' and `Half Life`, but to be honest the whole album is very strong and it is hard to pinpoint one track. The lyrics on Aha! Are very funny and this album has a good mix of humorous lyrics and more serious, meaningful lyrics. Heap always was an individual artist, in fact that is why many of her fans enjoy her music, and this album lives up to her previous high standards. It is one that sounds great on first playing and then gets better with repeated listening and I can see it being one of my albums of the year.

Free Music Review: Imogen, refreshingly different Hit: 4 Stars
I have to say that had I not heard about this record on NPR there is every likelihood that it would have slipped through the cracks for me. The story about the journey to record this album and her artistry compelled me to want to listen and I'm glad that I did! In today's crowded sonic airwaves, filled with "boy-bands" and "pop-tarts" its refreshing to hear someone different; an artist who must know that she's not going to be featured in a Best Buy or Target circular but pours herself into the music. I like this album, its atmospheric, something to play on these introspective Fall days. Imogen delivers a record that you don't have to "try" to like but rather one that you immediately feel you are a part of; there is nothing profound, nor are there cliché anthems; simply strong musical artistry, and for me, I can ask for little more. A pleasure!
Free Music Review: If you like Imogen Heap, then you will love this. Hit: 4 Stars
In my opinion, there are albums that focus on songs and then there are albums that focus on being an album. This is the latter. This is a set of well composed songs that maintain a similar feel while never giving you the same song. Imogen does a wonderful job of staying predictable, while providing a fresh take on her already vastly-unexplored method of musical exploration. However, If you are expecting another masterpiece of a song that challenges music and captivates you with its sheer beauty, you won't find it in this album. None of the songs are bad and you won't be disappointed, but that's assuming you like Imogen Heap. If you want to hear that special song that changes the definition of song, listen to "Hide and Seek" again... This is a personal, enchanting, and refined album and I'm proud to have it in my album.
