Free Music Notes for Speak for YourselfFree Music Review: Complete Masterpiece... Hit: 5 Stars
Immi's latest album is one of the best albums I have ever had the privelege of hearing. It is a complete masterpiece! From every single little synthy sound and catchy riff its wonderful ear candy. Immi's voice is so beatiful, so light, so airy... It powers up each and every one of her songs. There are not many albums which I can listen to straight... I usually skip a couple of songs... But Speak for Yourself plays on repeat on my Zen Microphoto! Its AMAZING! I can listen to it any time... all the time! She creates the most beautiful songs... They start out so simple yet turn into intricate songs. She utilizes her voice as an instrument, not only singing lyrics but for the backtrack as well, with airy ooohhs and ahhs that cast a ghostly haunting image into your mind. She weaves each song so tenderly, so emotionally that you can feel what she feels through her music. Getting the message across is a breeze for Immi. You might have heard Immi's debut album I Megaphone (an anagram for Imogen Heap) or from Frou Frou (Which I absolutely love)... This latest offering from Imogen Heap couldn't be any more perfect. Each song is crafted so well by Immi, perfected and tremendously unique. I love how her songs are so unique, so creative... Filled with elements that just give you goosebumps...With those shiveringly beautiful phoneticy sounds...dummtagarum... The final product being the masterpiece that is Speak for Yourself. I recommend this to anyone who loved Frou Frou or loves Electronic Pop. GET SPEAK FOR YOURSELF! YOU WONT REGRET IT!!! I just can't get enough of her!
Free Music Review: Brilliant, unpredictable, and strangely satisfying! Hit: 5 Stars
Whether you're reading this because you like Frou Frou, saw Garden State, or heard Imogen on the O.C., you're here because you're not afraid of bold and unusual music. Imogen's is a highly unusual voice, and "Speak For Yourself" echoes that quality in its composition.
Imogen truly does speak for herself on this album, writing, singing, and producing each track herself, lending her talents, emotions, and artistic interpretation to all aspects of the album. As a result, the lyrics are interesting, the vocals are breathtaking, the musical arrangements are staggering, and the sound production is unstoppable. Imogen creates compositions worthy of a symphony with the strangest array of synthesized vocals and distortions, weaving them together to create songs that, while following a standard verse chorus verse pattern, are constantly building and changing in logical and satisfying, yet unpredictable ways. Such evolutions in each track make every second more interesting than every second that came before it.
This is a must have for anyone looking for a fresh new album to listen to from start to finish. Many of the tracks have serious single potential (Headlock, Goodnight and Go, Have You Got It In You, Hide and Seek, Clear the Area, The Walk) but the songs all flow together best as a coherent album, with strong emotional and musical themes running throughout. This isn't Frou Frou, and it definitely isn't I Megaphone, but it's absolutely worth a listen.
Free Music Review: An original, accesible album for all - yes, really! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is a solid five stars for me, and it's been a long time since I last fell in love with an artist in such a big way. If we put aside any musical snobbishness, it's hard not to admit that this is a beautiful collection of fresh, genuinely original tracks with both 'serious' and popular appeal.
Tracks such as 'Come Here Boy' or 'Goodnight and Go' are examples of what Imogen does best and does like no other. Solid melody and accessible, complementary production. Perhaps as a long-standing fan of electronic music I enjoy the dance elements more than others, but I still believe this is much more than your average 'indie music with bleeps'. I must admit the masterful weaving of trip-hop beats, delicious soundscape, pop hooks and inventive bass work gave me tingles that no music has managed to do in a good few years.
'Missing You' was a wonderfully surprising example of Imogen's range. A reasonable piano-driven effort, it works best when considered in the context of a whole album. I couldn't bear a whole album of this stuff but it works beautifully as a breather between the more powerful songs.
'Hide And Seek' is experimentation that works, at least for me. Another rareity when so many artists seem to be praised for their sheer inaccessibility. I'm pleased to note that this musical and technically competent effort is considerably superior to the likes of 'Leave Me To Love', which left me with little more than tinnitus and a mild headache.
Free Music Review: Best Pop CD of 2006....no, really! Hit: 5 Stars
Pop music won't change the world, but this CD certainly enhances it. Since most reviews sound like a breathless commercial for an english ale ("brilliant!"), I'll make a short list of the "family tree" of my favorite pop CDs of the last few years; you can draw the connections: Daybreaker (Beth Orton); Holy Road (Lizzie West); Music for the Morning After (Pete Yorn); Ray of Light (Madonna); Surfacing (Sarah McLachlan); Tambourine (Tift Merritt); Somebody's Miracle (Liz Phair); Sparkle (Rubyhorse); Flaming Red (Patty Griffin).
In regard to the content-protection for this CD, is this safeguard truly a good idea for a record company promoting a musician who 1. mortgaged her flat to pay for production; 2. has a relatively unknown name in the States; and 3. exists in the 21st century? Umm, no. Let me think again: no. Throwing two songs on soundtracks/compendiums is not exactly the optimal way to achieve a tipping point; much better to adopt the strategy of 'dealer promotions' who give away the first taste. I'd love to turn on friends to Imogen's songs ("Daylight Robbery" in particular, it's a, umm, brilliant pop song) in a visceral way that might encourage them to buy the CD and financially support the artist (read that: "help her pay the second mortgage"), but hey, record companies always know what they're doing (SEE the history of The Beatles' early record contract rejections).
