Free Music Review: Fantastic Album

Closer to Frou Frou's Details than her earlier release iMegaphone, Speak For Yourself is without a doubt the most fantastic purchase I've made this year. I imported the UK edition, so I didn't have to worry about the whole copy-protection thing that has become a bit of an issue, but if you head over to www.imogenheap.com, on the 'iBabble', there is a thread about where to go to download a patch so that you can upload the cd onto your computer.
So by all means, don't let that stop you from buying this album.
Whatever you do, don't pay any attention to the reviewer that stated that he/she could see Imogen with a 'britney-mike' dancing with the Backstreet Boys. Imogen wrote, produced, and did everything else on this album. She took out a second mortgage to finance it. Lumping her into a category with them isn't fair to her. And I'm not even one of the seriously obsessed fans.
I love this album from start to finish. I couldn't pick out a 'least favorite' song, even if you paid me.
Another Imogen track worth listening to is 'Can't Take It In', from the Chronicles of Narnia movie soundtrack.

`Speak for Yourself' showcases Imogen Heaps exceptional talents and is in my opinion the best place to go for that first taste of what she has to offer. This Japanese import has two extra tracks that add to the overall package, but usually increases the price of the album a great deal as well. They are good additional tracks never-the-less, in Imogens wonderfully unique style. This album has lush layered musical programming and excellent song writing and vocals that complements it perfectly. More widely known as the voice of Frou Frou, Heap is a credible artist in her own right and songs such as `Hide and Seek' show how esoteric, yet complex some of her writing can be. The stand out track for me has to be `The Walk' which I could quite happily play on repeat. I find that Heap has quite a thin voice, but it is textured and augments her music perfectly and her take on modern electronica music is well placed. For unique, well crafted music this is well worth a look. It takes a few listens to get a feel for it, but once you do you'll never look back.

The album, as you can see from the average of all reviews, is amazing. Dont let it get by you - simply check out her myspace if you have doubts.
This review is mainly of her live performance. Unlike a few reviews on here, I was hugely impressed by Imogen's performance live. Through a year of my life I was playing over 200 live shows a year. I have seen a vast number of live performances and Imogen is in no way lacking. She has an amazing fusion of live spontinuity and creativity that other performers would kill to have. She is completely relaxed on stage and draws the audience into her emotions. When I saw her, she was strongly fighting a cold (coughing between songs) yet her voice remained unwavering and solid throughout the set. I have seldom seen such a unique fusion of music, creativity, and performance all driven by one person. Her live shows bring forth the CD's in such a way that it will drive you back to listening to her album with a whole new perspective.
If you can, check her out in a smaller more intimate setting, but no matter the location, dont miss Imogen Heap live.

This CD is truly remarkable! Imogen Heap may perhaps be one of the most creative and experimental newer mainstreamish artists out there! Her pieces are unique and each song keeps the listener captivated and listening. My personal favorite on the CD is Hide and Seek, which is a nonmetric piece with a lot of flow and musicality. Her lyrics are slightly melancholy and nostalgic and her voice is truly unique in the sense that I have heard no one like her yet. She seems to sing from her soul and holds herself as some sort of enigma. I really loved this album because it is so different from anything I've heard which makes it satisfying as well. It will really diversify your CD collection. However, if you are a very traditionalist type of music appreciator, I wouldn't necessarily recommend her. She pushes the musical envelope and dares the listener to step out of their comfort zone. She is trying something new and unconventional and I believe she is succeeding at it. For those of you willing to experiment with new artists or looking for a breath of fresh air, here it is. Never heard of Imogen Heap until rented movie "Garden State". While going thru the music credits, found a cool song by "Frou Frou", which led to Imogen Heap, then further internet search. When I heard this CD, was asounded. Who is this? and how did she do it?
This music is complex, rich, textured, layered, very original. Interesting evocative rhythms, arrangements, melodies, crystal clear vocals. It stays with you, pulls you in, grows on you. Her style is vaguely reminiscent of some of my favorite independent artists from the 80's, but she goes well beyond them into her own original territory. You can feel some influence by Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Jane Siberry. But this is no cheap copy of anyone. This lays down real new ground. Imogen is a great artist. This is timeless music.
She apparently(?) did the sound production too, very tight, clear, excellent. How can 1 person be so talented? May have been inspired by Peter Gabriel's dictum to "Do It Yourself". Anyway, take a listen to the samples. If you like original music, this will not disappoint.
