Free Music Notes for A Sense of Purpose

Free Music Review: Utterly blown away
Hit: 5 Stars

Never before had I anticipated an album as much as I had for this one. That being said, I had really high hopes for this CD. Even after my first listen, my hopes were fulfilled, and more. Every single part of this album is gold. All of the members of In Flames are on top of their game here. I was a little worried about how the vocals would sound, but I really enjoy Anders' new style. He even makes use of his great growls quite a bit throughout the album. His higher pitch and raspy type of voice is still very dominant though. The guitars are stronger than the last few albums, the best they've been since Colony in my opinion. Throughout listening to this CD, I was again and again dumbfounded by the guitars. It's an amazing mix of the Colony/Clayman days and the newer era of In Flames. The drumming and bass are top notch as expected also. The keyboarding/synth is epic on this album, without over doing it. Here's a breakdown of the songs:

The Mirror's Truth: As the first single, it is very good. Quick pace, strong instruments, even stronger vocals and a catchy chorus. 5/5

Disconnected: Another quick song, with even better guitars. Anders also uses his great growls in this song, and they sound great. It's another catchy song. 5/5

Sleepless Again: I was amazed by this song. It's the first song with stand-out keyboard use, and they are very well mixed into the album. It starts with a great, albeit quick, acoustic intro and then doesn't let up from there. Everything on this song is perfect. 5/5

Alias: The first slow song on the album. It's not really mellow, just a slow pace. Still, its very good. Another really catchy chorus. The acoustic break is beautiful, it's honestly the highlight of the song. 5/5

I'm the Highway: Back to a faster pace for this song. Just as all the other songs, it's strong in all areas. The chorus is good without being overly "poppy" like some may be. The solo on this song is exceptional, its good to hear solos by In Flames again. 5/5

Delight and Angers: Sort of a medium paced song. The chorus is the standout for me in this song. In Flames knows how to make a song really catchy without it being corny. There are also a couple of melodic breaks in the song which are really cool to hear. 5/5

Move Through Me: For the most part, its a pretty fast paced song again. The solo is again really good. This song has a symphonic touch to it, to make the chorus epic. 5/5

The Chosen Pessimist: This is slow, melodic, epic 'ballad' song. I don't like calling it a ballad, but that's what people understand it as. The vocals are different; Anders' voice is really good, although he takes a different stab at singing. Later on in the song, where it in with more guitars and stronger vocals is where this song shines. It is no less than epic, an amazing song. 5/5

Sober and Irrelevant: Quickly jumps from The Chosen Pessimist's slow pace into a blistering fast song. This song marks a change from the first half into the next. It is heavy and fast, without any letting up. The solo is again great. 5/5

Condemned: Opening riff will basically crush your skull. I was surprised at the intensity of this song. It follows the path that Sober and Irrelevant took into a song that is much more heavy than the first part of the album. 5/5

Drenched in Fear: One of my favorite songs on the album. Its fast, but still catchy. Vocally, its the best song on here. From quite a bit of growling to some clean singing in the chorus. This song is really a sum of the whole album's feel. 5/5

March to the Shore: Another really fast song, but also slows a little bit. Great vocals with more growls, although not much. Another catchy chorus adds to this song's greatness. 5/5

A Sense of Purpose is simply amazing from start to finish. If you even slightly enjoyed anything from any of In Flames' latest works, I definitely recommend this album to you.

A Sense of Purpose Poster

In September 2007 In Flames entered IF STUDIOS, in Gothenburg, Sweden, to record their new album. "A Sense Of Purpose" was recorded and produced by the band together with Daniel Bergstrand (vocals) and Roberto Laghi (Bass, guitar & drums) and mixed by Toby Wright in LA (Metallica, Slayer, Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Motley Crue etc) and mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Marcussen mastering studios in LA. With this new album there is no doubt that IN FLAMES will take a step up the ladder towards becoming one of the biggest metal bands of all times.
