Free Music Review: The best In Flames EVER...
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always been an In Flames fan... from the first time I heard "Colony," until "Soundtrack To Your Escape" was all over Headbanger's Ball on MTV2.

I really liked the last couple of albums... they were really good. I thought the band used the keyboards and samples tastefully. I found they added an extra dimension.

This new album combines the modern production and creative songwriting from "Soundtrack To Your Escape" and "Reroute To Remain" with the speed, fury, and bombast of "Clayman" and before.

This may, very well, be the best, most complete, album this band has ever done. I'm almost afraid to see how they top this.

Every song on this album is intense... there is not one "filler" track. There are the thrash-death metal type songs that In Flames are known for... "Take This Life," "Vacuum," and "Versus Terminus." There are some KILLER mid-tempo songs here, with some of the sickest grooves ever heard... songs like "Leeches," "Scream," and "Pacing Death's Trail" invoke images of a concert crowd head banging in unison, while this group pounds away.

The title track is one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard, this with an acoustic guitar providing the rhythm guitars.

"Dead End" is interesting, in that it features Lisa Miskovsky's angelic voice coupled with the screams of Anders Friden.

Vocalist Anders Friden's scream has become refined over the years... and, he's become a pretty good singer. Songs like "Leeches" and "Reflect The Storm" feature his clean singing voice during the choruses, while his scream flows through the verses. His singing on the title track is amazing.

The tag-team guitar tandem of Bjorn Gelotte and Jesper Stromblad may be the modern-day version of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith... these guys trade riffs and solos as if they don't realize it's 2006, and the guitar solo is all but extinct. This album has some of the best guitar riffs ever heard on an In Flames album. Neither one over-shadows the other, and neither one even tries to. The sound of the two guitars, either playing in unison, trading solos, or complimenting one another, is the bedrock of this band's sound.

The rhythm section of bassist Peter Iwers and drummer Daniel Svensson bring a kick to the head in every song... Svensson's drumming has always stood out in the band's sound, with the killer grooves and the lighting-fast fills... and the production of the album really brings his drumming to the foreground of the mix. Iwers' bass guitar work is probably the best in all of modern heavy metal... watching the bonus DVD, I've never seen the fingers on a person's right hand move so fast. And he doesn't just stay in the pocket, thumping root notes... he triples Stromblad's and Gelotte's guitar riffs.

And, yes, we still have keyboards here... but they are not as heavy in the mix as they were on "Reroute To Remain" or "Soundtrack To Your Escape." They are added for background, and do not take on the role of leading the song, as in "Cloud Connected" from "Reroute To Remain."

Folks... what we have here is a fine example of how heavy metal is supposed to be played... heavy, loud, fast, and LOADED with talent. The production is flawless, and there is not one track that I wish would have been left off... it must be extremely boring in Sweeden, for these guys to just lock themselves away, and learn to play their instruments like this.

The bonus DVD really doesn't have any special features... just the band in a practice room, playing each song off the album... but there isn't a live sound... the sound is the actual album... just the band in black and white playing the songs... but it's still cool to watch these guys play.

This is SO worth the money, you'd be a fool to pass it up... as I'm writing this, this album is on it's fourth spin in my cd player... on the day it was released. This was worth the wait... the Gods of Metal must be smiling down.
