Free Music Notes for Sense of Purpose

Free Music Review: Everything that goes up must come down.
Hit: 1 Stars

When In Flames released Reroute to Remain, I considered it the equivalent to Metallica's Black Album, half-hearted and watered down, yet tolerable. When Come Clarity was released, I had hope that In Flames was moving in the right direction and maybe one day be a mix of pre-Clayman and post-RTR may be able to co-exist. Now with A Sense of Purpose, my hope is lost.

This album is a textbook example of what happens when a band gets fat, lazy and overconfident in their success and The songs are nothing but repetitive and uninspired. Whats worse is that anyone who has heard anything released before 2002 KNOWS they can do better, but for some reason, they just wont. The guitar work sounds like a jumble of possible riffs that never get fully developed and are easily forgotten, as is the drumming. The song arrangements are predictable and amateur at best, but the worst by far are the vocals. Anders Friden has created a niche for himself by having unique and recognizable harsh vocals in the metal world a la Tomas Lindberg or George Fisher, however he manages to botch that up by trying to sing clean vocals. If he was any good at it, more power to him, but unfortunately hes not. Anders comes off as whiny and incapable of holding a note. It amazes me that neither his bandmates or his produces haven't been honest with him and flat out said "Dude, you just cant sing".

Calling this a musical "evolution" is a complete cop-out. Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest have all managed to evolve and change musically while still remaining the same at the core. If they can do it, why can't In Flames? The term "musical evolution" is just another way to justify putting out a bad album, and A Sense of Purpose is prime example of it.

Overall, this album will appease the generation of new and younger fans that are looking for something a little harsher and faster than their standard Atreyu or Avenged Sevenfold albums and this will further divide the older fans and drive them to look for the next band that they can hang their had on. The next Metallica has arrived, its just a shame it had to be this band.

Free Music Review: solid production
Hit: 4 Stars

I have been an inflames fan right from the beginning, the jesters race was the first album that i bought, and apart from a stumble for reroute to remain thay have gone from strength to strength. for a start you cannot compare albums to previous releases, any musician knows that a writting is a reflection of the thoughts and feelings of the creator at that present time. fair enough that their sound, timbre, tempo and feel has changed from album to album, but thier overall talent and quality has not ceased to improve. The drums are tighter with more flair, the melody on the guitar laced with fitting solos are more prevelent, bass is strong and the vocals are more ranged and expanded. my favourite part of inflames has been their lyrical prowess, this album is thier strongest example to date. it is difficult to find bands with lyrics that aren't negative, in flames makes you self aware, with such lines as a king in my own mind, the mirrors truth, and reroute to remain. this is the best quality production of in flames to date, solid all the way through, for those who don't like it because their earlier productions were thrashier of faster are missing the bigger picture of a high class recording

Free Music Review: Let's get one thing straight.......
Hit: 4 Stars

.....Slayer is never going to top 'Reign In Blood', Metallica will never eclipse 'Master Of Puppets', Children Of Bodom will never top 'Hatebreeder', and most sadly; Pantera will never reform and/or even attempt to top 'Vulgar Display Of Power'. What does that leave us with? Living in the now. And I swear I'm taking a hostage and opening fire if I hear another "Why won't they play like they did on 'The Jester Race'?". That album was made in 1996, you know; back when most of you 'experts' were throwing fits in mom's minivan because she wouldn't let you listen to the angry rebellion of Green Day's 'Dookie' on the way to tee ball.

The more I listen to this album; the more it grows on me. If there's one thing you can't accuse the band of; it's making the same album twice. The mix of this album is markedly more organic, not since 'Colony' have the drums sounded so natural. The guitar work is excellent as per usual, and Anders once again brings the goods. For all you kiddies out there who want to hear him death metal grunt...no dice. Instead, you get a voice that doesn't sound like Cookie Monster.

Taking the first paragraph into consideration; you actually might like this album..

Free Music Review: Just doesn't work......these guys have sure changed alot over the years
Hit: 2 Stars

I just don't get it....compare the first couple CD's with this....is it the same band? If this was a new band, I have to admit I would like the CD more, but as an I.F. guy, I continue to get lost in their recent works......I would recomend you guys check out the new Skinlab 'SkinnedAlive' live cd if you want to get back to listening to raw, incredibly heavy music.

Free Music Review: Not what most of us expected
Hit: 5 Stars

I guess I had expectations of something different on first listen, something heavier carrying on from where Come Clarity left off. At first I was a bit disappointed, and after a couple of listens placed it on the shelf in the **sighs** pile of cd's I probably should have downloaded.

I get In Flames, I understand the lyrics - feel the music more than just inside my head. They create music that goes beyond the simple, the processed shizen that other metal acts are pushing out their arses. I gave it another try, and I am elated. The music is another chapter in the evolution of the band. I needed to open my head a bit more to discover that metal is more than "heavy", "hard" and "fast". They are ensuring that they are not to become a cliche, and keeping the spirit of metal - the defiant, the aggressive, the unique alive for all of us.

If you're a In Flames fan, give it a bit and listen to it again. I guarantee you'll find the hook. If you don't like it, fine - the music industry loves you for the NuMetal and Emo in your rack anyway.
