Free Music Review: "Heights" Hits the Heights
Hit: 5 Stars
This tantalizingly brisk recording of the Tony award winning musical is both a hybrid and an amalgamation of two so seemingly disparate musical styles that it would have seemed inconceivable that such an achievement was possible. Purists of either camp, be it latino/rap/hip-hop or traditional musical theater, may squirm at "In the Heights" as an abomination when it is actually doing what inventive commercial music always does: challenges, entices, broadens and ultimately invites a new audience in. While not a blockbuster in the vein of "RENT", "In the Heights" actually has a more successful and clever score than even that seminal piece. Composer-lyricist-actor Lin-Manuel Miranda has seemingly come out of nowhere fully formed as a composer and a very skilled technician in the craft of songwriting. His work here represents both a cutural perspective and a grasp of the musical theater idiom within which he has chosen to express his idea, yet he does not do this in a clumsy or preachy manner. In fact, his work is so seemless as to be breathtaking. Songs such as "Piragua", "Blackout" and the title piece are so galvanizing they practically jump out at you, while the gentle, earthier moments in "Alabanza", "Everything I Know" and "When the Sun Goes Down" are heartbreakingly poignant. It's cliche at this point to site Sondheim as an influence, yet it's unavoidable in the character-driven songs of "In the Heights" or in the masterful way in which Miranda lays contrapuntal lines across his most comlex pieces. Still, that is not to say this is a forbidding or cold musical. Miranda is too smart and exuberant for that and he knows his actors need to be allowed to come alive.
And do they ever. Out of nowhere comes one of the most exciting ensembles in memory. Miranda is a disarming lead, but the oomph of this recording lies in the galvanizing cast. They grab their moments and make the most of them. Olga Merediz is a memorable "Abuelo", Robin De Jesus stands out as Sonny and Christopher Jackson's Benny is a warm presence, especially in "When You're Home". Then there is Karen Olivo as Vanessa. She makes her moments live, especially on the wryly uplifting "It Won't Be Long Now". We'll hear from this talented actor again, without doubt. The recording is crisp and clear, orchestrations are flavorful, evocative and exhilirating and the overall impact is stunning. This is not your mother's Broadway musical. So be it. Times change.

Broadway hasn't been very good at incorporating various strands of pop and rock over the past 40 years. Most of the shows attempting that draw from contemporary chart sounds have felt awkward, rather than "young." It's all the more rewarding, then, that 2008 saw not one but two successful efforts - Passing Strange and In the Heights. The latter, set in New York's predominantly Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights, is propelled by first-timer Lin-Manuel Miranda's high-energy, horn-and-percussion-driven score. Miranda managed to modernize classic elements found in most Broadway shows by mixing them up with Latin and hip-hop arrangements. "In the Heights" and "The Club" are joyous ensemble numbers, for instance, while "Carnaval del Barrio" is an uplifting eleven o'clock belt, "Sunrise" a romantic duet and "Everything I Know" a sentimental soliloquy. While Miranda himself convincingly plays the lead, this is a true ensemble piece.
