Free Music Notes for Morning View

Free Music Review: Almost perfection..but bogged down by a dying style...
Hit: 4 Stars

Judging by their latest release "A Murder of Crows", Incubus have ditched their funk/Nu-Metal/Progressive/Poppish style for a more straight forward rock sound. And for good reason. The moniker genre they were usually placed under has long since died out, and the remaining bands that attempt to release material even remotely close to Nu-Metal usually replicate the Nu-metal bands that came before them. Lets face it, Nu-Metal is dead, and it never really was that great to begin with. Incubus was one of the few great bands that incorporated Hip Hop/Funk/Metal/Jazz and a DJ all in one package.
"Morning View" sees the band in their most popular and at the height of their career. Now in the lime light, with millions of fans, "Morningview" does show the band ditching much of their Hip-Hop/Funky roots for more mature production and compostition. The vocals have become the lead instrument with the band taking much of a back seat. That is not to say that "Morninview" is a less-than-stellar album, on the contrary, it is an album worth owning with much to offer. The musicianship is still amazing and the vocals and lyrics are just as deep and meaningful.
"Morninview" takes time to break into, and even more time to find the hidden gems beyond just being a "great" radio friendly album. Just like "Make Yourself" I took this album at face value and have missed much of the magic to be found in each song. Under a new light one can easily see that "Morninview" is one of the greatest releases of its time.

Free Music Review: Bottom Line: Great Music
Hit: 5 Stars

Incubus just knows how to make good music. Even though Morning View is not another SCIENCE, its a great album. And I don't know how you can call this album soft. Sure its not has hard or fast as old incubus, but its not soft. Morning View is a more upbeat uplifting album, but it does have some heavy and hard rifts in it. The lyrics sound great as well, and it has some addictive hooks in it.

I hate when people get stuck on a certain style a band might have had at one point. All bands go though different phases in their music, and Incubus is no different. I'll be the first too admitt that the old incubus albums rocked, I loved the funk style that made SCIENCE so great. But I also appreciate the new incubus, Make Yourself and now Morning View are both great albums.

This is a more mature sounding Incubus, and it is something different from Brandon and the guys. I personally am glad Morning View is not a retread of SCIENCE or Make Yourself. Fortunatly for us, Incubus is not a band that continues to pump out the same album over and over again. They do what they should, and thats make a different soundng album every time, and they are great at it. I'd rank this as one of my top 3 Incubus albums, the other two being SCIENCE and Make Yourself.

Anyways, I find this to be a really well made album. Many of the songs could be singles, and it's very diverse album that can appeal to alot of different people. I bought this album when it came out in 2001, and I'm still listening to it today, in 2006. I think that speaks for itself as to how good it is. Bottom line is that morning view is a great album and has alot to offer.

Free Music Review: Critically, Id consider this their best release to date.
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered incubus one night in 1999 or so, just before Make Yourself was released. I heard "Pardon Me" on the radio and i was hooked. Two years later, Morning View is released. By then, i was already familiar with their songs and was eager to see how they had evolved/built upon their earlier work. Lemme tell ya, this record did not dissapoint. Incubus has a knack for evolving with each cd they release. I say "evolve" rather than "change," because it is extremely graceful rather than forced.

As a critic, this cd has pretty much everything i could hope for: experimental time signatures, violins, interesting guitar effects, soulful lyrics, even crickets chirping at the end of the cd! It is really nothing you would expect from a "nu metal/funk" band. This cd is rich and complex and very thoughtful.

As a listener, its a little harder to get into. With Make Yourself, all it took was one spin and i was forever hooked. This CD (along with most other great cds) takes a little longer to sink your teeth into.

Overall, id reccomend this cd to anyone who can appreciate a band that isnt content with creating the same sound over and over again, a band that wants to create something that THEY are proud of, a band that is a step above the other bands that it is unfairly labeled with.

Free Music Review: Another Amazing Release
Hit: 5 Stars

Since "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." Incubus has kept impressing me. "Morning View" is another example of a great release by the band. Of course things have changed since then but it isn't for the worse. No that didn't happen until "A Crow Left Of The Murder", I'm not too big on that album. Anyway back on the subject at hand. "Morning View" is a little softer than the others but that doesn't make it bad by any means. It's actually really great. It's not quite as good as the others but it's still awesome nonetheless. My favorite tracks on the album are "Nice To Know You", "Circles", "11am", and "Have You Ever". Here are my track ratings...

1. Nice To Know You - 10/10
2. Circles - 10/10
3. Wish You Were Here - 10/10
4. Just A Phase - 9/10
5. 11am - 10/10
6. Blood On The Ground - 9.5/10
7. Mexico - 9/10
8. Warning - 9.5/10
9. Echo - 8/10
10. Have You Ever - 10/10
11. Are You In? - 9/10
12. Under My Umbrella - 9.5/10
13. Aqueous Transmission - 7/10

Overall: 93% A-

This is just another example of how awesome this band is. It just seems they always give me something to love with each release. The really cool thing is that with each cd it's all unique and different from the last in some way. It just helps show that Incubus is a band of all its own.

Free Music Review: Good Flow for Good Music
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a good CD. There's no other way to put it. The songs are varied and flow easily from one to another, despite some of the huge differences in the types of sound used. From acoustic guitar to the turntable effects Incubus is famous for, this album has it all. It's a great place to start for new Incubus fans, or those who have tired of the onslaught of "Drive" and their newer albums.

The introspective, brooding sound of "Mexico" is a sure highlight along with the surprisingly philosophical "Aqueous Transmission" that caps the album. The classic Incubus sound that we have all heard is present as well in "Nice to Know You" and "Wish You Were Here." The variety of sound and the skillful song writing earn this album its five stars.
