Free Music Review: The Tropes of Wrath
Hit: 3 Stars

The paradox a guy like John Williams must wrestle to the ground is that now, a generation later, people are going to want to go to an Indiana Jones movie and see Indiana Jones and see Indiana Jones plotlines, villains, themes, dialogue, and...music.

Williams composed a primary motif that is one of the most hummable and unmistakable, and then backed it up with "scary," "intense," and "action" tropes which might have some variations but, ultimately, are repeats of the same stuff. Like the fella said, what do you do for an encore?

Well, reuse, recycle, rehash.

Where I think Williams missed a significant opportunity was in the passage of time and geopolitical space from the "first three episodes." Sure, he uses 1957 rock and roll, but no Sputnik stuff. And, most significantly, he passed a chance to take traditional Russian themes, particularly military music, to complement the great character acting, costuming and period Soviet props.

The result is familiar, fun and, of course, exceptionally well executed. But it could have been so much more!

Why not use the the five-note musical theme from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind?" If Spielberg can recycle a flying saucer visual, why not grab that music and run for the door??

Just a thought.

Free Music Review: Less spirited than...
Hit: 3 Stars

I keep my review simple... but before I give my thoughts I would like to let you know that I am a filmmusic fan for almost 20 years and have hundreds (around 500) of (good) scores. From the Golden Age till recently. So I guess I do have some insight what is good filmmusic and what isn't...

I would say that this William's effort is less spirited and energetic than, lets say Temple of Doom. Although it is pretty good in some parts, overall its somewhat disappointing. I would give this score a 7 out of 10. If there will be ever a complete score release than it will be an solid 8 or 8.5. Sadly many nice cues (silo 51, complete Jungle chase and many more) are not here on this cd. Still, its a nice score (especially tracks like "the Departure"), but it isn't a "goosebump" score.

Hopefully George Lucas will release the complete scores for Temple of Doom and the Last Crusade. Especially Temple of Doom is one heck of a ride!

Free Music Review: Johnny, this one coulda been better!
Hit: 3 Stars

Of course, film fans have high expectations when going to see and HEAR Indiana Jones' films. I am not different.

Sadly, John Williams hasn't created anything truly memorable in this score. It only comes to life when one hears the familiar retreads from the original. Other tracks sound like "Jurassic Park," "Harry Potter," or "Superman" leftovers. Only does the track "The Adventures of Mutt" possess some of the spark that was the key behind the success to the first Jones' film.

I realize that composers can "revisit" themselves or borrow from others, but Williams usually throws in something new in each of his film compositions.

I just don't hear it in "Crystal Skull."

Free Music Review: Why Digipak?
Hit: 3 Stars

I am tired of the record companies using Digipak rather than the trusted jewel case for packaging. This usually means I have to spend time scanning the packaging and trying to get it to fit and conform to jewel case inserts.

Free Music Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull by John Williams
Hit: 3 Stars

Good, but not as good as I hoped for. Of course the expectations were high, but not really convincing.
