Free Music Review: Great Music, Great Vocals, Great Songs!
Hit: 5 Stars

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves good music done by professionals who can sing and play these great old songs as well or better than the originals. Taking nothing away from those great original songs which stand on their own reverential pedestal, Shaw and Blades deliver a fresh, modern approach to performing these tunes and their respect for the history of these songs really comes thru.
Far from being a karioke disk, this CD is a celebration of the songs that we grew up with and there is not a weak one on the disk. Some songs are recorded with very few changes to the originals and others are given a different spin like "I am a Rock". The guitar solo which replaces the Keith Emerson keyboard solo at the end of "Lucky Man" is a highlight for me. When you listen to "Sounds of Silence" it makes you want to kneel and pay homage.
With so much pre-packaged, heartless, lack of musicianship garbage that is some of todays Rock, this shows that talent still exists and these guys know how to ROCK!
Buy this disk, whether you like Styx, Night Ranger, Damn Yankees or not. Or whether you are old or young. Young people especially should listen and appreciate guys who can sing and harmonize. The disk is not over-produced or over-compressed and sounds huge the way it should sound. You will not be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Unexpected
Hit: 5 Stars

I already knew that I liked these guys together but I didn't expect another cover album thrust into the market place, to being any better or worse than the others before it. (Especially with Styx just having done one) However, this really is exceptionally better than the rest of the crowd and is really that good.

The singing is great, but hey we knew that would be true. What works for the cd as a whole is that unidentifiable x-factor. Some of the songs play it safe (Sound of Silence) and some don't (I am a Rock), and I think that maybe the mix of sacred and profane treatment of songs is part of the secret of the cd's success. In my humble opinion, the version of Lucky Man exceeds the original (and this is coming from an ELP fan). Tommy's replication of the keyboard solo on his digitech whammy pedal is just too cool for words.

It's nice to see such great guys keep a musical friendship alive as well as gigging with their equally impressive bands.

Free Music Review: Great Songs and Great Sound
Hit: 5 Stars

I have always been a fan of both Styx and Night Ranger and a major reason for that has been the fact that these groups actually play music in their songs...not just a few power chords behind the vocals, but melody and counter melody, and intricate instrumentation. And I have been a fan of the work Shaw & Blades have done together in the past, so this was an easy purchase for me to make. And I was NOT disappointed.

The songs they chose to cover are all great songs. Reading the liner notes was very interesting to hear how they decided to approach each song, and let me say that my opinion is they did it right on every one. Some they left alone, some they changed up a bit, and they all work well. So good, fact, that not only do my wife and I love it, but my 3 year old and 7 year old daughters love it, and ask to listen to it over and over again. Best cd I've purchased in a long time.

Free Music Review: In Cred a bul
Hit: 5 Stars

I heard Tommy and Jack on Q106.5 In St. Louis in I'm pretty sure 1995. They did an acoustic set that included the 2 of them on an out of tune guitar with the most amazing harmonies ever. They jammed playing Sound of Silence and Crystal Ball. They had fun at Ted's expense talking about how he hit on one of their moms or something like that, it was hilarious. I taped it on a cassette off the radio and still have it to this day. My buddy and I jammed on it all the way to the Damn Yankees Concert at then River port that night and saw what I think was one of the best concerts ever. I hope that these guys take their acoustic tour one step further and make a CD. It is so tough to recapture that amazing kind of sound. If you make it, we will buy it. This new is CD absolutely incredible and to me really captures a little bit of a modern yesterday for me.
Thanks D. in St. Lou

Free Music Review: Oh help
Hit: 5 Stars

Mr. Robert Collister obviously has no musicanship about him. Nor does he understand this CD. These are two musicians that are covering THEIR influences and songs that touched them, not songs that they care Robert Collister likes. Who are we to judge what they like? We review how they did at covering the tunes. An individual that has an understanding of music, although maybe not in fovor with the genre can still understand if it is well done. Well done Shaw Blades!! Now as far as what Ricky Rocket had to say in his review, he obviously hasn't read what the original artists have said about how Shaw and Blades covered their own tunes. The original artists have praised them and stated that they have brought out so much to the original tunes. I wonder who understands these great classics more? Ricky or the original artists?
