Free Music Review: Insane Clown Posse - "The Calm" (3.5 stars)
Hit: 3 Stars
After releasing a dark and sinister album such as "Hell's Pit", the Insane Clown Posse decide to bump the light up a bit to give us "The Calm" (before the storm).
I know that this is considered to be one of the worst albums that ICP has ever released, and I don't think it's as bad as many Juggalos make it out to be. It has some...well, "different" material on here, and "different" as in cheesy and soft, but it does have some of ICP's usual formula on here which makes the album worthwhile.
Violent J does quite a bit of singing on here, which isn't bad, but his raps on here overpower his singing. There isn't any songs on here that I would consider "wicked" or "horrorcore". But I think this album sits in the lines of hardcore and experimental.
After their 6 Joker's Cards era had ended, of course they had to re-search a new lyrical (and musical) style. I don't think they found it here. But the lyrics here are great, regardless.
The production is so-so, this is the first album that the Insane Clown Posse produced entirely by themselves. The production on here is undescribeable, the beats sound like it had some inspiration from their "Bizaar" and "Bizzar" albums, but if I had to pinpoint a single-word description for these beats, I would go with "atmospheric", because that's the first thing that comes to mind. I think the beats are pretty good considering the fact it's all self-produced, but I still think they could have added a bit more to them.

All-in-all, I would say this was a slightly above average release. I would have gave it a higher rating if the production and some musical vibes were altered. But I still recommend this to Juggalos and fans of atmospheric rap. This either may or may not be disappointing, either way it's for you to decide. It's just slightly above average to me. Peace.
