I just recieved this CD today and have listened too it four times straight through and think it's really awesome. This is also a RARE pre-RATM collectors item(it's still in print however you'd still probably only find this online. If you were to choose this or Tom Morello's pre-RATM band Lock Up's first album (MUCH, MUCH, MUCH softer), BUY THIS instead!!! This CD is very heavy and kind of funny to hear Zack scream so much. First, one should know and understand that this has NO Public Enemy, N.W.A., Afrika Bambaata or hip-hop influence WHATSOEVER. As you'll see on the front cover, this is before Zack got his dreads and started geting influenced by the Rap/Urban lifestyle. Zack does nothing but scream (and sing a little) throughout on these songs. this influenced by the likes of Black flag and Minor threat, etc.. I also (as one reviewer said) believe Zack is a bit more passionate about his music on this Ep than he was in RATM. I like RATM better and I think I probably always will, however this is still a great album (Ep - meaning it's longer than a single, but too short to be classified an "album"). So yeah, this is honestly about as Hardcore as Hardcore gets. Except for Death Metal, this is Nearly as rocking, loud, and fast as bands like Pantera and Farside (the latter is another good pre-RATM band(Zack was in it))
The Songs:
The intro, "Burning Fight"is my personal favorite. This song starts out with a loud scream, and then Zack's roars come in until the chorus... "IT'S MY BUR-NING FIGHT, MY BURNING FIGHT!!!! THIS IS MY... BURN-ING FIGHT!!!" (true anger)
"Undertone" starts out with 10 seconds of guitar feedback and then heavy bass comes in followed by distorted guitars. Zack's unaudible roars follow. Not much more can be said because this a short song.
"By a Thread" starts out with a Drumstick count, followed by Zack singing in a loud voice similar to something MC5 or Minor Threat would release (that same style). Catchy, fast drumming, distoted guitar solo in the middle. A good song!
My 2nd personal favorite, the title track "No Spiritual Surrender" is their longest running of the songs. It starts off with a good bassline and then a catchy drumbeat comes in and then zack lets out a nice growl and then starts singing his best lyrics yet. (GUITAR BREAK) "No... SPIRITUAL... SURRENDER, NO... SPIRITUAL SURRENDER, NOOOOO...." (GUITAR BREAK) "NO... SPIRITUAL... SURRENDER, NO... SPIRITUAL SURRENDER, NOOOOO...." (this time that last NO sounds even more intense.)
"Sacrafice" is another brilliant song, and although they're all awesome this is probably my least favorite of the 6.
"Redemption" also features Zack doing some form of "singing" (this singing sounds better than the singing in "By a Thread" however). Probaably my 3rd favorite, "I BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION! I BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION! I BELIEVE IN REDEMPTION!!!! RE-DEEEEEMMMMMPPPP-TTTTIIIOOOONNNN!!!!! ( and after that awesome scream (I think it's the best on here, you have heard end of the filler and the end of this excellent EP by an excellent band.
Anyway, If you're still reading this I do recommend that you BUY THIS and ENJOY IT (YOU WILL)
Also, in the liner notes, Zack thanks many of his former High School bands including Hardstance and Farside, while Gorilla Biscuits and other CA Hardcore bands are also acknowledged.
I really recommend this EP, give it 6 stars, and BUY IT! because it's rare, Hardcore, and mostly awesome. Even if you don't like screaming jmusic if you like RATM than get this today. it's an awesome add to your collection.
