Metal bands continue to proliferate. Like experiments in the lab, some succeed but many more fail. On one side you have the great originals who create the dominant forms, and on the other you have the imitations and derivatives. I'd put Into Eternity in the second category. Still, the band has its fans and I wish them both well.
My beef with this CD is that they try too hard. I don't know if they can pull these arrangements off live, but the songs sound like strings of unrelated phrases stitched together in the studio. Most of these patchwork efforts sound pretty damn tuneless if you ask me.
Listening to Into Eternity, a lot of stuff comes out of your speakers but it doesn't leave a mark on your heart. At no point do you feel like tapping a toe, nor are you ever transported to that space where metalheads like to go.
In fact, it's hard not to snicker at the goofy pacing, the overplaying, and the sense of hysteria. It's an inadvertent parody of the genre.
Closing on a positive, I highly recommend Scar Symmetry's Pitch Black Progress to fans of Into Eternity.
