Free Music Notes for Dance of DeathFree Music Review: DOD picks up where BNW left. Hit: 5 Stars
After the amazing Brave New World, Iron Maiden comes back with the excellent album Dance of death. Although this new release is not as a masterpiece as BNW, it's still classic Maiden that has nothing to envy from their past glory.1-Wildest dreams : Catchy opener, but not the strongest song on the album. 9/10 2-Rainmaker : Pop metal at his best. Very catchy but not cheesy at all. 10/10 3-No more lies : On every album you have a Steve Harris song that is around 7 minutes long that kills. That's the one. 9,5/10 4-Montségur : Bruce Dickinson at his best. Very heavy and the lyrics are probably in the top 5 of all Maiden songs. Brilliant. 10/10 5-Dance of death : Very theatrical and dramatic, an opus that only Iron Maiden has the recepy. It flirts with past masterpieces such as rime of the ancient mariner and 7th son. 10/10 6-Gates of tomorrow : Very good song. The backing vocals of Bruce over his own voice on the chorus is brilliant. It brings the song from OK to very good. Not a filler. 9/10 7-New frontier : Nicko McBrain first writing contribution ever. And a good one. Again, not a filler, very catchy. 9/10 8-Paschendale : Another epic about war that is custom Maiden but with a new structure. 9,5/10 9-Face in the sand : A very good song that takes time to grow in you. There is a beautiful solo by Adrian Smith. 8,5/10 10-Age of innocence : Same as face in the sand. There is a very heavy part that rocks. 8,5/10 11-Journeyman : Maiden goes acoutic. Why not ? It's refreshing and very good. This is no cheap ballad like we heard too many in the 80's. This a mature song by a mature band. 9/10 Overall, not BNW, but close. I only have two cons about this album. First of all, it's a little bit long. Maybe face in the sand or age of innocence could have been put on a B-side. But then again, they deserve their place on the album. Secondly, the quality of the solos (Dave Murray and Janick Gers) is very average. They are some time repetitive and way too fast. Please learn from your buddy Adrian. Buy this album, you won't regret it !
Free Music Review: Forget Blaze Bailey - True 80's Maiden is back ! Hit: 5 Stars
I have been loving Iron Maiden and I consider their first 5 studio albums within the most influencing Metal world's ever, plus their absolutely awesome Live After Death as maybe the best live rock experience. Later, with the left of their lead guitar Smith and frontman Bruce, I was able to listen only one or two songs per album, really not understanding how a such awesome band could ever fall in ths way. I began to smile again 3 years ago with "Brave New World" and their good live "Rock in Rio" (containing the best version of "Hallowed be thy name" ever !) and today...Dance of Death appared in my favourite music store ! What can I say ? They're back, more powerful than ever, obviously learning on what they have done in these years ! They have abandoned almost completely the slower intros which have weakened "BNW", and the resulting energy in certain tracks it's awesome. First track, the single, it's quite below Maiden standards, but the real album starts with the second one "Rainmaker" : among the best Maiden songs ever recorded, believe me, you will be singing this one for days ! "No more lies" and "Montsegur" are really powerful tracks, like no one was on "BNW". The title track "Dance of death" it's the classic Harris' great epic (I can't stop listening to it), the following two "Gates of tomorrow" and "New frontier" have good guitars and chorus. "Paschendale" it's another great epic and a very good song in the same vein as "The trooper". Then there are "Face in the sand" and "Age of innocence", showing you their intention to allow you breathing only rarely ! The last track "Journeyman" it's quite melodic and contains a splendid chrous. I am really amazed, all the tracks but the first one (I can't explain why they made it the single) have their power, their great moments and you will never desire to skip one of them. Buy it, you will not regret ! UP THE IRONS !!!
Free Music Review: On a Maiden kick... Hit: 5 Stars
I've loved classic Maiden for so long, it is a part of me like favorite things from your youth often become. To be honest, I really only purchased Ed Hunter since Seventh Son, as I sort of quit expanding my library and had less and less time to listen to music.
Well, I found myself breaking out some old Maiden albums lately, and I did a search to see what they were up to. I saw that this was one of their most recent albums, and I had to give it a listen (yes, years late but since I've been disconnected from the music scene, it was as if it was just released to me!).
I love this album. I mean I absolutely love it. I hate buying albums today because they are all one, maybe two good songs and the rest complete garbage filler. Maiden wasn't like that in the past, and they aren't like that now. Even if there are songs that aren't your cup of tea, you can still listen to them and admire the rolling guitars, the lyrics, whatever...you don't feel like they just threw a song on because they needed another 7 minutes on a cd.
As for individual songs, my favorite so far is Montsegur. I've listened to this song over and over, and I love how it rolls over itself and then opens up to a sort of anthemic cascade. I'm sure that as I listen to the cd more and more other songs will start to compete for the top spot in my opinion, but for now this one is smokin'!
In any case, yes this review is years late, but since I just got the album from Amazon and I really love it, I just had to give it the rating it deserves in this time when buying albums is really buyer beware.
A side note: If someone was ranking just Maiden albums alone, would this get five stars? Hmmm...well, probably not, since there has to be seperation between their top work and the rest. It would be hard to give this album the same rating as say Piece of Mind or Number of the Beast for instance. However, I would give this a solid 3 1/2 to 4 just within Maiden albums, and that is saying ALOT!
LONG LIVE MAIDEN!
Free Music Review: Maiden Force Be With You Hit: 5 Stars
- Wildest Dreams Great rocking opener from Adrian about his dream of ASAP headlining Donnington, with Maiden in support.- Rainmaker A John Grisham novel at last gets the Maiden treatment. Blistering solos from Janick and Dave bring the tale of the underdogs vs a big evil corporate law firm vividly to life. - No More Lies Very reminiscent of those old Spectrum Computer programs: 10 Print "No More Lies"; 20 Goto 10; - Montsegur Probably a song about the Catholic church. Perhaps a priest 'touched' Steve Harris a few years back, now we have that priest to thank for this the heaviest song on the album. Dance Of Death - The band somehow combine Spinal Tap and Michael 'Riverdance' Flatley to produce this chilling epic set in the Florida Everglades. If you don't air-guitar to this song then you have you hands bound behind your back in Guantanamo Bay and are being played this song as part of a CIA sleep deprivation 'PsyOp'. - Gates Of Tomorrow Dickinson penned song about that Star Trek episode where Kirk and Spock arrive at a distant planet where they find a portal back to past time. They go back to 1930s New York to allow the shows producers to save money by filming on the studios backlot. - New Front Ear Topical song about genetically modified organisms, penned by Nicko McBrain. Nicko has a history of working in this field anyone who has seen his TV work with brightly coloured miniature bears will know what this song is driving at. - Paschendale Filler. I usually hit skip straight away. - Face In The Sand A song about the boys love of Japanese Bukakke. Too much time spent watching videos on the tour bus I think, but nevertheless it has produced this brilliant song, with some really great solos. - Journeyman The lads finish on a bittersweet note. A lovely acoustic number about one of their old band mambers. Some would say its rather cruel, but then they probably haven't just listened to Virtual XI. Ho, ho, ho. Honestly brilliant.
Free Music Review: Maiden true to form! Hit: 5 Stars
What can I say about Iron Maiden that hasn't been said already? They rule! And their new album is no exception. Wildest Dreams-Nothing really catchy here. Good guitar work, but the melody just falls flat. 3/5 Rainmaker-Awesome song! Interesting lyrics, and a great melody to boot. Definitely listen to this song. 5/5 No More Lies-A slower song, so I guess that's why it's not one of my favorites. Still, it has some nice lyrics, and heavy. 3/5 Montsegur-HEAVY! Great chorus to. Bruce never ceases to amaze me with his range and ability to deliver a dead-on preformance. The melody on this song is also excellent. 5/5 Dance of Death-Killer song, although I think it might have been better without having "pranced" in there, but hey, who cares if the rest of the song is amazing? I especially like the fast paced part at the end, where Bruce things along with the melody-"When you're lying in your sleep, when you're lying in your bed, do you wake from your dreams to go dancing with the dead?" 5/5 Gates of Tommorrow-Cool song. Not my favorite, still good though. 4/5 New Frontier-Another killer song! Has some nice riffs, and the lyrics are reminiscent of an old horror movie. 5/5 Paschendale-AWESOME!! Epic right here! About the WWI battle at Paschendale, this song starts with a slow tapping, then the guitar comes in with a sort of melancholy tune. This doesn't last long, though, as after a while the song kicks into full gear with ass kicking riffs and rhythms! 6/5 Face in the Sand-Sounds a bit like the title track, but I'm not saying it's bad by any means! The guitars work nicely here to deliver a heart pounding assault. 5/5 Age Of Innocence-A cool song. Kick-ass riff, and also pounding drums make this track a must listen. 5/5 Journeyman-A slower song, which is probably why I don't like it too much. Still worth a listen, though. 3/5 What can I say? Maiden has certainly put out another masterpiece. And, hopefully, there will be many more to come. Up the Irons!
