Free Music Review: Edward the Great is Great.
Hit: 5 Stars

Hair metal may be the most hated of so-called x-rated music that was too ambitious for even its most dedicated little monsters, hairy and often dumb and white. But these songs contained within Edward The Great are undoubtedly some of the best rock songs ever recorded with what was probably the most undermined, original, and uncopyable sound. There are now people who could copy all these riffs with ease, but screw those people; they have no style and are usually Joe Satriani: the worst thing to happen to guitar since the eighties drove it out of existence for a decade; riff-wise.
I would have thought a year or two ago that there was nothing more to find in rock-this after listening to Metallica over, and over, and over again; like most prepubescents do when they first discover real music. Of course I was wrong, because anything sounds good after three months of Metallica obsession; even country. Not really. Just kidding. Except for Johnny Cash.
The first catcher was the first song, run to the hills. From there every song has its own rythm and classic style. In fact, it's hardly important to go through them from one to the other, because every single one deserves not to be judged. Just buy it.
I will say that this does have some mistakes to it, though. Hallowed be Thy Name is a glaring omission, Powerslave was not present, and these including Aces High could have replaced those horrendous tracks by that "other singer". Those are but a few, though, and are made up for with interest by the classics on here.
All that needs to be said is that the riffs are amazing, Bruce Dickinson sounds like he was made for his band, and this one compilation has so few of Maiden's humongous catalogue that you will of course want to find more after listening to these few. Living after Death should probably come next.
I am going to say something now that may seem insane to some people, but this compilation is probably one of the, let's say, two-hundred greatest albums ever made. This is because of the wild disabandon of the conventional hair metal eighties, and self-procaimed style and one other thing that is most fundamental. They put themselves on a chopping block by being so gregarious, wild, selfish and confident; and succeed beyond what anyone could imagine. Few bands have ever been so silly, unserious, and obsessed with their own style and kept their fans after so many years. Because of this, each song sounds like the best song you've ever heard in your entire life. They have succinctly put themselves in a rare circle inhabited with legends like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest and Brian Eno. The guts, the courage, the indomitable strength to have faith that you are the greatest in some way makes Iron Maiden belong on every list of greatest albums, groups, or songs in the history of Robert Johnson until now. People will never understand this, the normal genre of people, any way. So you fans will always be fighting an uphill battle against ignorance.
Oh, and by the way, you could place any Iron Maiden collection of hits up there as long as these songs (accept of course those bad ones obviously) are included. This one is probably the closest to perfection you'll find, though.
