Free Music Review: Iron Maiden
Hit: 5 Stars

Truly, the first Iron Maiden album, "Iron Maiden", is an excellent piece of work. Although some credit must be given to the fact that these songs were already being played, and henceforth the band were able to make changes here and there. But, from the opening guitar of "Prowler", to the end of "Iron Maiden", this album is truly a masterpiece. Also, this album contains many Iron Maiden classics that deserve to be heard.

Their first studio recording went really well, considering that the only other experience Maiden had was making 4 tracks for the legendary Soundhouse Tapes. Although Steve complains about it being too unprofessional, raw, and unclear at times, in my opinion that was the way the album must have come out. The "unprofessional" sound it has was able to give the raw power that made Maiden, well, Maiden. For this reason alone it must be why it went to such a high spot on the charts, number 4. If you have not heard this album, do so now! That being said, on to the songs:

1. Prowler- Like I said this song is truly amazing. After hearing this song, it is no wonder why the Maiden spirit was able to catch on in the late '70s/early '80s. Although it does have a rather punky beat, Paul DiAnno is able to make it heavy thanks to his rather aggressive singing. 4/5

2. Sanctuary- Here, another song that really explains why Maiden were getting so over from other bands. This song delivers so much emotions, it is no wonder why it is still played today. From Dave Murray's guitar (and "siren wailing") playing, to Steve's bass playing, to Clive's magnificent drumming, add in DiAnno's aggressive style, this truly is a wonderful song. But of course, let's not forget Stratton's backup vocals and fine rhythm guitar playing. 5/5

3. Remember Tomorrow- Here, the album takes a more darker turn. This in is very noticeable in DiAnno's voice. The lyrics themselves are dark indeed, one may wonder if this song is truly about the appearance of Satan and The False Prophet as it is said in the Bible. "Scan the horizon, the clouds take me higher, I shall return from out of the fire". Religion aside, this song is amazing. The instrumental passage in the middle only makes it better. 4/5

4. Running Free- Certainly my favorite song in the whole album. Written by Paul DiAnno, this is yet another song that catches that early Maiden spirit. From its whole theme of being free and causing trouble, this song really gets you in the mood to do anything. Seriously, you feel powerful after hearing this song. Plus, Steve's bass and Clive's drumming have never heard so beautifully together. 5/5

5. Phantom of the Opera- Truly, the first of the many epics of Steve Harris is a classic. Like Bruce said at Rock AM Ring, "You are not an Iron Maiden fan if you do not like this song." This may contain some of DiAnno's best work, and it also has some of Steve's best bass playing. If there is one song to listen to in this whole album, its this one. Stratton on backup vocals does not hurt either, as it make the atmospere of the song much better. 5/5

6. Transylvania- The song that "...never had a singer and probably never will..." Transylvania is simply amazing as it shows us the complex style of writing that Steve Harris has. His bass playing is awesome, and that is only added on to the twin guitarist and the always magnificent drumming. A true classic. 4/5

7. Strange World- Certainly the most overlooked song on the album. However, it should not be. This is a truy magnificent song. From the beginning musical interlude, to the depressing (yet at the same time peaceful) state of mind that it brings, it is a beautiful song that deserves more credit than it is given. 4/5

8. Charlotte the Harlot- HAH! Who said that a song about prostitution cannot be good? The first part in the "Charlotte the Harlot" series, here we are introduced to Charlot, who is a harlot (prostitute). Her true lover acts as her Conscience. Telling her about the relationship they once had, how she now has no feelings, and that frankly she has no more pride in herself. Truly, another classic. 4/5

9. Iron Maiden- The ending of an album has never sounded so great. From the opening riff, to the introduction of the second guitar, to DiAnno's squeals at the end, this song is all about entertainment. Although its theme, the Iron Maiden, is very dark, this song stil has the punky groove that Maiden had in their early days. And believe me, that is not a bad thing. Not only is this a classic song, it is also an anthem. Maiden have used this song to end their live shows with and to also bring out Eddie. But, just like anyone else will tell you, Bruce is the only one to give the song the metal edge that it needed. 5/5

Songs to listen: All of them
Songs to avoid: None
Closing Comments: Must have for any Iron Maiden fan and anyone getting into Maiden.
