Free Music Notes for Piece of MindFree Music Review: It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This Hit: 5 Stars
From the beggining to end, this epic cd is as good as it gets. There are no bad songs whatsoever. This is a beloved cd to Iron Maiden fans. This is an axe players dream. Bruce belts out the lyrics from as deep down as he can grab them. I loved this cd the second I picked it up. You find that you can't help but keep popping it into your stereo or discman whenever you get the chance. Known as one of the top metal albums ever to many metal fans and Guitar One Magazine. This album seems to get better and better with every song, never letting up even a bit. To most Maiden fans (including myself) this cd is ranked near the top of their Maiden albums and even their entire collection of metal albums, and rightfully so. Even when you look at the album the first time and see Eddie standing there chained up, no arms you know it's bound to be a fast, angry, guitar shredding, metal paced album. Believe me on this one, you'll never get tired of this album. Steve Harris once again gives us a masterpiece in his song writing and shows us how classic of a metal band Maiden is. Here is how I rate the songs each individually.
Where Eagles Dare- 9.5/10- What an opener for this album! Fast paced metal throughout. There isn't as much singing as usually on this song and that was odd to me, but believe me when I say the instruments make well up for it.
Revelations- 8.5/10- At first I didn't care for it much, but it grew on me and it is actually a very decent song in every aspect and has a great intro. Bruce started his song writing with this song.
Flight of Icarus- 10/10- A greatest hit and no wonder. Just listen to Dickinson's words being belted out while Murray and Smith belt out the addicting guitar riffs. This chorus will be in your head for days. Great song.
Die With Your Boots On- 10/10- This is quite different from other Maiden songs, especially the chorus which seems to have wrong timing on the sing in the background and then Bruce's voice, but this differnce is a very good one. It's unique and the verses will pound into you.
The Trooper- 10/10- One of my top 5 favorite Maiden songs ever! It is such a great Maiden anthem. The intro gets you going, and when the chorus rolls around, there's no turning back. A great war chant, and an amazing song.
Still Life- 9/10- What is essentially the title track, this songs comes heavily at you, and doesn't stop trudging. This is an all aroung great song.
Quest For Fire- 8.5/10- A good song with somewhat bewildering lyrics. It has a very catchy chorus and Bruce sounds great all the way through.
Sun and Steel- 8.5/10- Good song with a cool chorus that makes you want to bob your head. Great signature bass galloping in intro and verse by Steve Harris.
To Tame A Land- 9.5/10- A great way to end the album off. When I listen to this song I think that it must have taken Murray and Smith forever to come up with the guitar parts(especially on intro and right after first verse) bec. they are phenomenol. Maiden does an amazing job here on ending the cd off with a very soothing, clean sounding song.
Defenitely a must have for all Iron Maiden fans. Run out to the store if you don't have a copy or buy it here on line, but just get it. You need The Trooper somewhere in your inventory. It's too great to pass up. Definitely worth every cent of money.
Free Music Review: Piece of mind is a great album Hit: 5 Stars
I got this album a long time ago, and it was sitting on a shelf for a long time. i recently found it and popped it into my CD player. was is shocked or what!! this is a great album. the opening track "Where eagles dare" is an amazing opener and has an even more amazing riff. One of the greatest album openers in the history of iron maiden. "revelations" is a nice track that i think that has a bit of progressiveness in it. the song jumps between hard and soft rock through out and really creates a good song. "flight of icarus" is a nice rocker that is easy to bang your head to. it has a nice solo too. in fact all of them do!! addicting chorus. "die with your boots on" is a criminally underrated song. this is equal or even better than "flight of icarus". i must mention the addicting chorus! "the trooper" is the commercial rocker that is said to be one of the greatest maiden songs there is. the opening uh... "short" solos should i say?, are amazing. the lyrics are very nice. You really get the sense of what its like to be a trooper. "the smell of acreid smoke and horses breath, as i plunge into certain death.". wow. very descriptive!! amazing what iron maiden can do. the best part though is the chorus "ah". i love it. Best solo on the album. "still life" this song is a bit scary at first but eventually turns into a nice rocker sort of tune. the intro thing is a bit creepy but you'll get used to it. the intro is very progressive in my opinion. i really liked it. then around the 55 second mark bruce starts singing. this is a song where you don't want to press the stop button. but the only problem with this song is the "nightmares!!" part. it just....sounds weird.... but who cares? nice solo by the way. The lyrics are very descriptive and almost like a horror story. Scary!! "quest for fire" is also an underrated song on this album. i love it. the lyrics are a bit "eh...". but the musicianship....that my friends..is what shines here. in fact the musicianship is what makes this album amazing! I thought the solo here was very nice. "Sun and steel" is a great song about a samurai. its too short though. i want it to be longer!! "killer instinct, animal supreme!!" nice!! the vocals are nice. THe chorus is far beyond good. i guarantee that at least 3 out of the 5 people who are reading this review will sing along to the chorus. Good solo. The next and final song "to tame a land" is amazing. i thought it was a bit overrated but it grows on you eventually. the opening soft intro is nice but a wall of sound hits you right in the face. i never got the lyrics because i haven't read the book, so i thought it was "okay" to put it at best. The solo is far beyond amazing!!!! The riffs are what shine here. the whole atmosphere of the song sound.... a bit "nomad" ish...
great songs in order:
"the trooper"
"Where eagles dare" "revelations"
"die with your boots on" "sun and steel"
"flight of icarus""quest for fire"
"to tame a land"
OVerall this album is a superb album that should be bought by any one who is interested in iron maiden or just metal in general. casual fans of iron maiden should get this 2nd to "number of the beast" and extreme iron maiden fans who are really crazy about iron maiden, need to 1.) calm down 2.) and get this album.
Get this amazing album by iron maiden. you won't be dissapointed!!
Free Music Review: My Favorite Maiden Album, thus, my favorite album of all time! Hit: 5 Stars
WoW! Where to start? This album is just so darn good. Piece of Mind is it for me, it is the album that I cherish and listen to the most. I listen to Piece of Mind on a consistent basis and it still doesn't get old. Every song in Piece of Mind is great, but in different ways.
Where Eagles Dare opens up the album, and wow, what a way to kickoff a great album. The song opens up with nice but short drum intro. Where Eagles Dare is mostly instrumental and has some very catchy "spitfire" riffs that neatly match the song.
Revelations comes next, and it is one my favorite songs. I especially love the soft peace in the middle where Bruce sings with passion. Revelations also has some great guitar solos towards the end. Perhaps the best song that Bruce has ever written (with Powerslave closely behind).
The next track is Flight of Icarus, which was one of the big hits off of the album. The pace is slowed down a tad for FLight of Icarus, but nontheless, it's a great song that has a very catchy chorus and some great riffs that stick in your head for a long time.
Then comes Die With Your Boots on, which has one of my favorite intros to the song that consist of some catchy riffs with great bass work. The song then goes into a nice fast rocker. I especially love the two guitar solos in Die With Your Boots On, and I also love the backing vocals that are present during parts of the song, (they come from Adrian Smith I believe).
The Trooper. WOW! This is the song that got me hooked to Maiden a few years back. The dual guitar riff/harmony that is played throughout the song was stuck in my head for days. Everybody in the band shines in The Trooper. Nicko's drumming is great, Steve's bass is phenomenal as always, Dave and Adrian compliment each other really nicely, and Bruce sounds really great.
After The Trooper, comes Still Life which is sadly one of the most underrated maiden songs ever. After the opening backwards message, the song goes into a nice soft ballad-like feel. Bruce comes in and starts singing with a nice whisperish-soft tone, but then the song kicks off, and off we go! Still Life is yet another great song in a great album.
Well, next comes Quest for Fire, which is perhaps the maiden song that is ridiculed the most for having some silly lyrics. I torally agree, the cavemen lyrics are quite comical, but the instrumental aspect of the song is actually good. It's still a good listen and is not a bad song by any means necessary.
Then comes Sun and Steel, which is also a nice fast tune. It has a nice catchy sing-along chorus with great guitar work. Sun and Steel is yet another great song.
The album closes off very strong with the epic To Tame a Land. This song is quite underrated when compared to masterpieces such as Rime of the Ancient Mariner, but it's still one heck of a good song that is up there with other great Maiden epics such as Phantom of the Opera, Hallowed be thy Name, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
To conclude, Piece of Mind is a great album and is definetaly worth a purchase. The 15$ I spend on this album has to be on the best investments I've ever done. If you haven't purchased Piece of Mind yet, then there is huge void in your music collection. If you haven't done so yet, purchase Piece of Mind now!
Free Music Review: An angry Eddie and Maiden's meanest record. Hit: 5 Stars
At this point in there career, after three excellent albums,Iron Maiden began to fully form there sound.
Melding a mixture of punk and progressive with the duel guitar ethic of Judas Priest,Maiden became the third band in Metal's Holy Trinity, following Black Sabbath and Priest.
The band had already progressed quite a bit with the arrival of vocalist Bruce Dickinson on previous milestone,1982's Number of the Beast, but now with Dickinson part of the writing team and a new drummer in the form of Nikko Macbrain,Maiden just got heavier.
Piece of Mind is the culmination of everything that had been great on Maiden's earlier records, working out the kinks to make this one of the ten greatest Metal albums ever.
To review this album proper,we'll review song by song:
Where Eagles Dare-Hell of a way to start the album.
This World War 2 spectacle is an homage to the 1969 action film that the band was a big fan of and is a showcase for the amazing drum skills of Nikko, who creates a machine gun strafe sound that fits the epic sounding chaos.
A classic.
Revelations-Bruce's first fully written song for the band, and a foretelling of things to come for there next record,Powerslave,is another epic with one of Dickinson's best vocal performances.
Flight of Icarus-One of Maiden's greatest songs, thsi tells the story made famous in mythology.
Terrific riff and another classic vocal performance by dickinson, with alot of emotion that ranks it among the greats.
Note:NOT a favorite of Maiden founder,Steve Harris.
Die With Your Boots On-Awesome,apocalyptic tale of the futility of violence and war is one of the most, underlooked and anthemic of Maiden songs.
A favorite of fans, yet almost always, dropped from the live set.
A terrific riff and chorus highlights this catchy headbang.
The Trooper-Murray and Smith's most recognizeable and iconic riff in one of the greatest metal anthems ever written.
Telling the story of a soldier going into the Charge of the Light Brigade, this masterpiece does the impossible of fitting an epic into just four minutes!
(If only they could do that nowadays....)
Still Life-Underrated metal song,is also the most atmospheric track on the album and one of the creepiest, with interesting sound effects and a bizarre vocal performance by Dickinson.
Made the top 500 greatest metal songs list by Martin Popoff, two years back.
Quest For Fire-Sort of a filler track with Maiden telling the story of cavemen from the (then) recent film,Quest For Fire.
Not bad,but more of the equivalent to this album's Gangland.
Sun and Steel-Good fistpumper, not mentioned too often with a good riff and a short enough length to not add lethargy.
To Tame A Land-Good Maiden track, that takes us down the road to war again with one of the band's better solos and good lyrics(where are the fans of this one?)
The production on this album is the most raw and metallic, the band would ever have(and Harris'bass is actually recorded properly!) combining with good writing and classic riffs to make for one of the great Metal albums of all time, and arguably this band's best all around work.
A must have in ANY Hard Rock and Metal library.
Free Music Review: The classic American breakthrough for Maiden is still as fresh today as it was in 1983 Hit: 5 Stars
Iron Maiden's fourth full length release Piece of Mind was released in June of 1983.
The album was the band's first album for Capitol Records after its subsidiary Harvest folded in the US and it was also the band's debut with new drummer Nicko McBrain.
McBrain joined singer Bruce Dickinson, bass player Steve Harris and guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith to go with producer Martin Birch to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas (the same place AC/DC recorded Back in Black) to record an album that would solidify Maiden's place in hard rock/metal history.
Would the album be as great as it was poised to be or were they a flash in the pan, read on and find out (as I did when I first acquired the album on cassette in June, 1988 (Capitol version) and then CD in September of 1993 (Capitol version), then the Castle 1995 re-issue and the 2002 Sanctuary/Columbia remastered CD).
We begin the album with "Where Eagles Dare" penned by Harris. What a killer opening track! The track was lyrically inspired by the 1969 Clint Eastwood World War II movie on the same name and is a fast paced metal rocker. Next was Dickinson's first sole-penned Maiden track "Revelations" which is a classic masterpiece. Next is the classic Smith/Dickinson penned "Flight of Icarus" which is a killer rocker that got extensive rock radio and MTV airplay (when MTV showed real music). The song told the classic tale of the legend of Icarus. Dickinson's vocals here go from sing to croon to screaming, especially the last scream at the end! Murray and Smith belt out the addicting solos. The first half ended with "Die With Your Boots On" which is another song about going out in fashion and even if it means on the road.
The album's second half kicks off with the Harris penned rocker "The Trooper" which is a great song about war chant and a riff that mesmerizes you. We then have a goofy backwards message from McBrain before we start the Harris/Murray penned rocker "Still Life" and is a great song. The Harris penned "Quest For Fire" follows and is another majestic song with lyrics that was inspired by the ancient BC times or the movie of the same name. Next is the Dickinson/Smith penned "Sun and Steel" which is another great rocker. The Harris penned epic "To Tame A Land" closes the album in majestic style. Murray and Smith do a stellar riff which sets the tone and finishes the track. Then the main riff comes in and its lyrics tell of the book Dune. The song was to be called Dune but the writer of the book rejected it. The song ends with another Dickinson scream before turning into a killer instrumental to finish off a classic album.
Piece of Mind put Iron Maiden in the spotlight for keeps as the album would become the band's first US Top 20 and Platinum selling album and would not be their last.
Piece of Mind may have been recorded in 1983 but it still sounds great almost 25 years on.
RECOMMENDED!
