Free Music Review: Slave to the Music
Hit: 5 Stars

My introduction to Iron Maiden was their classic 1982 masterpiece NUMBER OF THE BEAST. That album was fast, hard, and relentless, but also melodic and intelligent, unlike a lot of other metal bands at the time. I loved every moment of it, but not even NOTB could prepare for what I was about to hear on the band's other masterpiece - 1984's POWERSLAVE. The raw energy and power of NOTB and the band's first two albums are still present, but POWERSLAVE is much more than a rock-your-socks off metal album. This was the turning point in Iron Maiden's career.

The band was getting more and more ambitious with each successive release. The epic arrangements and complex song structures that were merely hinted at on the 1983 predecessor PIECE OF MIND have blown up tenfold on POWERSLAVE. Lyrically, Steve Harris has matured, writing deep lyrics that are more mystical and philosophical than on previous songs. Bruce Dickinson also contributes some great lyrics on here, and his voice soars like never before over the sea of blazing riffs and Nicko McBrain's non-stop drumming.

And did I mention the riffs? Dave Murray and Adrian Smith certainly know what they're doing on this record. All of their riffs rock hard, crunch hard, harmonize with each other, and just get down -- the way riffs should always sound.

I love every song on here, but my favorites would have to be the raging opener "Aces High" (great solo by Murray), the intensely melodic and patriotic instrumental "Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)," the furiously catchy "Back in the Village," the Egyptian-flavored title track (I love that chorus!), and the well-crafted 13-minute closer "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Harris' moody bassline really shines on the last song.

Now, I don't know if this is Maiden's true masterpiece yet since I hear all of their albums in the '80s are just as good, maybe even better, but POWERSLAVE is truly a milestone in the world of heavy metal.

Free Music Review: Best Maiden Album
Hit: 5 Stars

When I was in high school, a friend and I used to jam out in his basement. I'd play guitar or bass, and he'd play guitar, bass, or drums. Everytime we jammed, there were *3* songs we always played to warm up - 'The Trooper' (off PIECE OF MIND) and 'Aces High' and '2 Minutes to Midnight' both from POWERSLAVE. I can play all those songs on the guitar in my sleep and we never got sick of playing them!

This is easily the strongest Maiden release. It also has my favorite Iron Maiden song - 'Powerslave'. There's one moment in that song where there's an instrumental section in four parts. The first part consists of a guitar picking through chords, another guitar playing a soft sustained lead as well as amazing bass playing where Steve Harris does some great harmonizing. After that, Adrian Smith solos, then there's a wild guitar harmony part and then it ends with a Dave Murray solo. I think of that musical boundary everytime I *think* of Iron Maiden. You won't skip over any of the tracks on this album. The ensuing world tour for POWERSLAVE produced some great concerts as well, and you can also purchase a 2-disc set called 'Live After Death' from that tour. You get a bunch of songs from this disc plus material from all four previous records.

We are also given some other great songs like Bruce Dickinson's 'Flash of the Blade,' and Steve Harris's 'The Duellists' which also has some great layered guitar work on it. We are also given the longest Iron Maiden song, 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' clocking in at 13:00. This song is all over the map, going from guitar harmonies to solos to a soft part where parts of the actual poem are read.

I also like the addition of Winston Churchill's speech in the beginning of 'Aces High' - as an American I feel this gives the music a certain type of British Nationalism - it adds character to the listener's perception of the music.

Free Music Review: Maiden's Finest Hour
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes Indeed this had to of been thier finest hour of Maiden History! This was the second album I ever listened to from the great catalog of all of thier albums ever made! Once I put this cd into my stereo a few years back, I just couldn't shut it off. So in other words it wasn't boring at all! It was like the "Beast" album, just kept coming with great songs, and yes a few to play some air guitar to as well ;) Aces High was my all time favorite song and is still to this day. 2 Minutes To Midnight was a great song explaining what could happen if the wrong hands got to the nuclear bomb and destroying of the earth. But then the other songs on that album, don't even ignore they are great in thier own rights. We have Flash of the Blade which was a great song about a fencer, which is one of Bruce's past time hobbies, The Duellists another one of thier best songs. Then the last three which totally was a nice ending to thier effort, "Back In The Village", thier title track, and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" which is one of the best stories ever told in a musical aspect. They have an instrumental on here called "Loss for Words" which is a pretty well jammin tune. I was never really into instrumentals until I heard this one. It just was going and never got boring. But after hearing this album I knew that Iron Maiden was capable of anything and could do any song they wanted to play and it would still sound superb. Great solos on every song, and this is coming from a guitar player! For all of you peeps trying out Maiden I would recommend this being your second album to listen to with the Golden Age singer, none other than Bruce Dickinson! Also this was the start of a long world tour known as "The World Slavery Tour" which is a very great cd and dvd. and on cd it's known as Live After Death. Enjoy this album and defitnitely turn the volume up on this because you will not regret it! Cheers!!!

Free Music Review: Wow, this is incredible!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm rather new to Iron Maiden, but far from new to the world of Metal. In all honesty, I started to like Iron Maiden while playing GTA:Vice City and hearing Iron Maiden on the VRock station. I am a huge fan of Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, etc. But I was getting interested in Iron Maiden and a friend suggested that I start with Powerslave. They were very right, this was an excellent introduction to Iron Maiden. These songs set the style of the 1980s, you can hear similar styles found on Metallica's 1986 release Master of Puppets.

1. Aces High - An incredibe song about an air raid, starts a little slow but then picks up and completly blows you away. 5/5
2. 2 Minutes To Midnight - The song that got me started on Iron Maiden, a total classic of a song. 5/5
3. Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) - A little weak as instrumentals go, I have to recommend Metallica's Call Of Ktulu or Orion instead of this. This is still a solid song however. 4/5
4. Flash Of The Blade - Another hard-core song, very solid guitar and vocals. 5/5
5. Duellists - Seems to be a continuation of the previous song, has the same theme as fighting and the same intensity. 5/5
6. Back In The Village - One of the weaker songs of the album, however still a good song. 4/5
7. Powerslave - The title track, one of my favorite off the album, introduces a style that will be used for the rest of the 80s by other big name bands. 5/5
8. Rime of the Ancient Mariner - The closer is a true masterpiece, although the middle gets a little slow, the wait is more than worth it. 5/5

All in all this has become one of my favorite albums of all time, right up there with Master Of Puppets (Metallica), ...And Justice For All (Metallica), Paranoid (Black Sabbath), Cowboys From Hell (Pantera), Vulgar Display Of Power (Pantera), and Colony (In Flames). Go out and buy this album, it's worth your $.

Free Music Review: I'm a Powerslave of this amazin' album.
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD has many classic maiden tracks:

Aces High: The fastest and funniest song on the Cd.It has two great solos from Adrian & Dave and eveything of this track is awesome.I like the guitar verses, the chorus and it's riffs.
5/5
2 Minutes to midnight:The famous song on the album. The main riff is perfect and the instrummental part is exc-llnt.
5/5
Losfer Words(Big 'Orra):I don't know what it's title means but what I know is that this last Maiden instrumental is fabulous.
I love the guitar playing, i like it at the 1st moment.
5/5
Flash of the blade: The main riff got me hooked at the moment I listened to it.It is awesome! Is one of the best Adrian smith riff along with the one of Wasted Years. Then the chorus I like too much. The guitar work is brilliant, but it doesn't have solos, something very strange.
5/5
The Duellists: I just listen to this song one time and amazed me.
It is a filler, but one of the greatest fillers( this sounds stupid but is true).
4.9/5
Back in the village: I still don't listen to this song. It is also a filler, I guess.
0/5
Powerslave: The main riff is very very good, it's sound, obviously, like an egytian song. The lyrics are great and the chorus is great too( Tell me why I have to be a Powerslave...).
Aft'r the the 2nd chorus comes the best part of the song, comes the beautiful slow solo of Dave, and then a fast one from Adrian, then a guitar duo, and then another Dave solo. Dave is shining in this song. My personal best.
6/5
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: One of the highlights of the album. Take to us into a ship trip of 13 minutes 30.Even if it is too long never falls flat.
5/5
And this is one of the best Iron Maiden's albums ever. I don't have a favourite one, bui this is a masterpiece.
