It was with deep saddness that I heard of the passing of Composer,Arranger,Singer,Producer,Songwriter,DJ and humanitarian Mr.Isaac(Black Moses)Hayes a few days ago.Myself being being a big Isaac Hayes fan.And having just about everyone of his albums decided to review the 'Hot Buttered Soul' album.Because this is the album that startled it all and gave birth to the movement.The Isaac Hayes movement that would come to dominate the mid sixties and on into the mid seventies.Isaac Hayes had a uncanny way of taking other peoples songs and turning them into something very special and unique.And when Isaac Hayes decided to rap on some of his songs the raps were done with class and style.You found yourself actuality feeling the pain of the guy as he drove his car with tears in his eyes on his way to Phoenix.On 'Walk On By' Hayes gives us a fantastic arrangment and a great vocal performance.And if you like some funk in your music you got 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic'.And finally you have 'One Woman' a song dealing with forbidden love sung with deep depth of feeling by Hayes.'Hot Buttered Soul' with its mixture of horns,strings,vocals and storytelling turned out to be a powerhouse elixir of sound.We should also give some credit to Stax records for having the guts to put this album out to the public.I think the biggest influence 'Hot Buttered Soul' had on R&B is that it put an end to the three minute rule for R&B songs.Before 'Hot Buttered Soul' R&B songs were three minutes or less.After 'Hot Buttered Soul' artists like The Temptations,Barry White,Donna Summer,James Brown and Stevie Wonder songs became longer.By breaking the three minute rule Isaac Hayes made it possible for these artists and so many others to extend their musical creativeness.After 'Hot Buttered Soul' Isaac Hayes and The Movement would give us the albums To Be Continued,The Isaac Hayes Movement,Black Moses,Live At The Sahara Tahoe and of course Shaft.With the great songs Our Day Will Come,I Stand Accused,Never Can Say Goodbye,Ain't No Sunshine and Theme From Shaft.This is just a small amount of music that came out of the fertile musical mind of Iassc Hayes.Well the fertile musical mind of Isaac Hayes is at rest now along with Curtis Mayfield,James Brown,Barry White and Luther Vandross.With only a few of the R&B giants left what the furture holds for R&B? I for one do not know.But I do know this.The music of Isaac Hayes will continue to be a source of entertainment and Joy(another one of his albums).Rest In Peace Brother Hayes.Free Music Review: My father was right about this music!

My father used to tell me that his generation of musical heroes made real music. He would say , "One day you young folks will listen to real music again." Dad was right. The era that birthed such greats as Isaac Hayes, Barry White, Hamilton Bohannon, and other innovators is long sought after today. One of the reasons we'll never forget them is because their originality is still sought after by today's artists. They borrow, sample, cover, and remix everything we grew up on. (Sure, they say they are paying honor to them by doing so, but we don't buy that crap!) "Hot Buttered Soul" ushered Mr. Hayes into a realm of mass acceptance with music audiences everywhere. How many of us still remember our parents playing the vinyl edidtion at cookouts and parties? That trademark bald head on the album cover still echoes loudly in my mind. Too young to get the full gist of the lyrics, I gathered he had poured his heart and soul into these songs. One thing was clear to me as a youngster, he sure made some of them long enough (lol). If you're new to the name and music of Isaac Hayes, consider this a perfect place to get to know him better. This album is a fine sample of the music and the genius behind Isaac Hayes. So to my father I say, "Yes sir. You were right yet again. We have found our way to real music...again!"

Ike left us today - I thought it'd be nice to share a story about him & "Hot Buttered Soul." I heard this album when it was new; I was ten years old, and my parents bought it for me. I was a budding musician, my sister had told me that Isaac was good, and I thought that the cover art (Ike's head) was "cool." I didn't expect that I'd be dancing around in my folks' house to the groove of "Hyperbollicsyllabicsequedalymistic."
I'd always dug "soul music," although I'd only scratched the surface, learning what I heard on top 40 radio. "Hot Buttered Soul" took me to a MUCH deeper place; the deep funk of "Hyper...," the beauty of what I believe to be the definitive version of "Walk On By," and the pained rap on "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" - this stuff IMPRINTED soul on me.
"Shaft" came later, and everyone who didn't know about Isaac found out, in a big way. I also loved his Polydor disc, "Don't Let Go," which included such gorgeous tunes as "What Does It Take," and "A Few More Kisses to Go."
Thanks to Isaac Hayes for songwriting, playing, singing and arranging that changed the way I listen to and create music, and to God for creating Isaac.
