Free Music Review: What Happened?!

Once upon a time this wonderful metalcore band called It Dies Today released a 6 song EP called "Forever Scorned" which is as melodic as it is heavy as it is angry. And so when I found out they signed to Trustkill Records, I was skeptical at first. With the two songs they released off of the "Catiff Choir" I somehow knew that this wasn't going to be the same It Dies Today as I was going to be used to. However, I liked the two songs they allowed us to preview off of "The Catiff Choir" so I went ahead and pre-ordered the CD and found myself to be a tad disappointed after the first spin through.
This album was made to go mainstream and fall into the scene of mainstream metalcore bands. Now don't misunderstand me when I use the term mainstream. It's not always a bad thing, but in the case of It Dies Today it is. What you will find on this CD is clean vocals that can be comparable to Atreyu's in a sense. Yes, he does still scream, but the CD consists of almost a 50:50 ratio of clean-vocals to screams which makes It Dies Today sound a whole lot less heavy and angry and more melodic which again isn't a bad thing, but in comparison to "Forever Scorned" sounds watered down and over produced. Not to mention that the lyrics are sometimes very cheesy on this album. The songs on the CD are hit or miss and I will find myself skipping songs here and there. The guitar work on the CD is just average and nothing sticks out. The opening track is heavy, but has no structure or melody and sounds boring. Other tracks have a good mix of riffage with melody and breakdowns and some tracks are just lacking that catchy feel.
Finally, I think that "Sirens" which is actually their second full length album might be catchier than this album. I have fallen out of touch with this band as they have become mediocre. "Forever Scorned" deserves 5 stars though.
