Free Music Notes for In the ClearFree Music Review: EuroPop Stylings with an American Twist Hit: 4 StarsIvy's latest release "In the Clear" could have easily come off sounding like any other CD from the likes of Air or Zero7. Indeed sometimes their sound veers dangerously into such derivative territory -- airy, swooping keyboards? Check. Lush atmospherics with a loungy, breezy, techno pop feel? Check. But Ivy has an ace up their sleeve with Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger. Bluesy, slightly gritty guitar work bump up against pristine dollops of synthesizer and piano. Some of my favorite tracks feature this push-and-pull tension between sounds ("Nothing But the Sky", "I've Got you Memorized", "Four in the Morning" and "Keep Moving"). Lead vocalist Dominique Durand seals the deal with her breathy crooning. But really on the whole, "In the Clear" is just great, impeccably arranged music. More people should be aware of Ivy's sound.
Free Music Review: Yet Another Triumphant Album! Hit: 5 StarsIn 2001 i was squealing with delight as my friend bought me back a copy of Long Distance from Japan.
I waited for weeks, excited and clammy at the thought of hearing a new Ivy album, and here i am 4 years later, new album in hand and squealing with joy again.
'In The Clear' is the perfect lift-off from 'Long Distance', yet steering back into the path set by 1997's 'Apartment Life'.
Once again, Ivy have made a perfectly melodic pop album, no song gets overlooked on this cd, each as catchy & dreamy as the next.
The perfect summer album.
Highlights include the ultra-catchy 'Tess Don't Tell' & 'Thinking About You', the Phoenix-esque 'Keep Moving', the breathy & hip-shaking 'I've Got You Memorized'.
Though the two closing tracks are by far the stand-outs for me on this album.
The beautiful yet bittersweet 'Ocean City Girl' certainly stirs the listener, while 'Feel So Free' is the ultimate driving song, the roof down, cruising in the sun while Dominique croons "...and i feel so free, yet i feel alright, never thought i'd feel like i feel tonight..."
Free Music Review: more of the same, and that's a good thing! Hit: 5 StarsI just picked this up at a store yesterday (apparently amazon's watch list doesn't actually notify you when something new comes out). This is exactly like all of their other albums, I did not notice what the other reviewers said about noisier guitars or dancey beats. Often, when a band has released as many albums as Ivy has, they start to veer off in "new directions" and stop playing the way everyone liked them for in the first place. Thank god Ivy has stuck to their beautiful sound, because there's nobody else out there this good.
What does Ivy sound like? Soothing, slightly french accented female vocals like a mom singing a lullaby over occassionally trippy ethereal guitar riffs and a variety of other instruments like piano.
Perfect music for lazy summer days, driving, or insomnia.
Free Music Review: Another great release! Hit: 5 Stars One of the few bands that I still follow, Ivy always seems to try something different, and they succeed again. Dominique has a unique sound, quite different from the generic female singers out today. Her voice has a sexy somber quality, polar opposite from the in your face style that MTV seems to prefer today. I love most of the songs, and while I agree that the guitars are more prominent, I think this is in many ways their dance record. The music in Keep Moving sounds a little like late period Blondie, Four in the morning, Ocean city Girl...almost every song has a hypnotic beat that gives the CD a different feel from past efforts. I don't want to scare anyone away though, this is pure rock music, and if you like something that dares to be different, that is commercial without being cloying, or is unabashedly sexy, by all means try this out. Then go back and see what you've been missing. It will be a wonderful and exciting journey.
Free Music Review: Ivy still going strong Hit: 4 StarsWhen I first heard Ivy's "Nothing But the Sky" on KCRW I thought, now there's my kind of space. A quick launch of the Rhapsody and hurrah, four great all original albums.
One of only a few bands I take the time to follow and this latest release is a strong continuation of their innovation and charm.
Dominique's vocals are of course captivating but being raised on classic rock I was first caught by the guitar work. These guys really are top notch and seem to have an endless repertoir of sounds, they are real students of their craft.
Thankfully, their being somewhat unknown has not caused them to do anything forced or stupid but the sound drifts along with grace and intelligence. Unfortunately, true artists like Ivy have to wait in the wings while the canned clishes like J-Lo and Tori Amos ramble about on center stage.
It will be fun to see them in Hollywood and San Diego!
