Free Music Notes for Pink PearlFree Music Review: a cd that will grow on you Hit: 5 Stars
When I first got the cd I didn't like it too much, but after having listened to it some, I love it. I didn't like it because I wasn't used to Jill's style. She isn't like normal artists, her songs are witty and will make you laugh and cry. She sings songs about her entire life from childhood until now, knowing that we all have events through life we hold onto. For example in Mexican Wrestler she sings about her first love and not being able to forgive them for not loving her. If you liked Jill for I Kissed a Girl, then you might not like this album, as these songs have so much more depth and showcase superior musical talent. If you've never listened to Jill and want a good album thats fun to sing along with no matter what mood you're in, give this a shot. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Fresh, clever, compellingly musical Hit: 5 Stars
Wow. Why does this girl not get airplay? Every song is a gem in its own way, but "Rainy Day Parade" alone is worth the price of admission. A beautiful acoustic opening, sing-song chorus, building to, and then backing off from a Phil-Spector-wall-of-sound, vibes reminiscent of the Stones' "Under My Thumb", all with wry lyrics like "We'll have a celebration, Gettin' back on my medication..." Even a dead white male like me has to love Jill Sobule's music. Sad or funny, you'll be humming these tunes. None of the self-pity maudlin stuff that singer-songwriters who fancy themselves poets tend to wallow in. Fresh like Elvis Costello was in 1977, with all of the musical hooks but none of the anger.
Free Music Review: My pick for album of the year 2000 Hit: 5 Stars
One of the major criteria I use in judging an album is how memorable the melodies and choruses of the songs are - is it catchy, can you sing along with it, do the choruses and bridges of the songs sweep you off your feet. Another is the "smartness" of the lyrics - does the wordplay really grab you and make you take notice with its gripping images. This album has it right on both counts. This is a brilliant pop album with traces of acoustic, punk, rock, jazz, ballads...The lyrics are SO good, with the songs all telling a wonderful story about the ups and downs of everyday life and everyday people. Even the sadder songs are sort of wistful. This album is simply great.
Free Music Review: The Girl who deserves a parade Hit: 5 Stars
This is a terrific album from Jill Sobule. Pink Pearls's focus is on ordinary life that is off-kilter. Sobule has made this album insightful and humourous. Sobule has made an art form of highlighting the obvious and her tales of modern life, while barbed, salvage the process of living it. The stand out tracks are 'Rainy Day Parade', 'Heroes', 'Loveless Hotel' and 'One Of These days'. Her music is always compassionate and funny - for if you didn't laugh at our creeping californian consumerist lifestyles - you'd cry. Laugh along as Jill reminds us to get back on our medication - and this album is just the tonic for post-modern relief. Highly recommended!
Free Music Review: Pink Pearl is RED HOT! Hit: 5 Stars
Thanks to NPR's Morning Considerations piece on Jill Sobule I discovered Pink Pearl, an extraordinary work that explores real issues for real women and real men. Whether it be the non-judgmental Mary Kay or the insightful Guy Who Doesn't Get It, Ms. Sobule is right on target with her lyrics. Expecially noteable is her artful exploration of the human conditions, anger and frustration in Mexican Wrestler, and the search for spirituality in Somewhere in New Mexico. The juxtaposition of powerful, serious lyrics against almost giddy music in Rainy Day Parade is reminiscent of Dory Previn's Mythical Kings and Iguanas. I highly recommend this CD.
