Free Music Notes for Seven MoonsFree Music Review: Bruce & Trower Rule the Land of the Seven Moons Hit: 5 StarsPut Simply: Seven Moons demonstrates a blazing performance by two masters of Rock & Blues, who've once again hit their strides and maintain their creative force and drive...in their 60s!!
As echoed by many, I'm a huge Jack Bruce/Robin Trower fan. And though I appreciated 'some' of the duo's former efforts (Truce/BLT/No Stopping) those records never garnered repeated listening. Perhaps it was the thinned-out 80s sound; perhaps it was because Jack's voice and style was definitely 'different' during that period (see: I've Always Wanted To Do This)...whatever the case, I never loved those albums.
Cut to 2007/2008. Jack (as evidenced by the Cream reunion, but also on his recent solo efforts) has re-captured the power in his voice, and his playing remains as powerful and driving as ever. Trower, whose playing has always entranced me, adds drive, punch, and creativity to every note, every solo. Put that together with Gary Husband (who's drummed on several of Jack's older releases) and you've got yourself a power-trio in the best sense of the word.
The fact that this album was mostly cut live is evident throughout. You really 'feel' like you're in the room with them; you 'feel' their enjoyment, and this is simply something that you just don't hear everyday.
On a recording note, this album is brilliantly done. Again, just listen to the title track to hear what I mean. It's clean, loud, up-front, and mastered to perfection. If the songs weren't so darned catchy, I'd love this album *simply* for the recording.
So, if you want to hear what these legends are doing now, pick up this release. It may be classic old-school to some, but it's inherently new, absolutely bluesy, and downright hot. Follow that path, to the Land of the Seven Moons.
Free Music Review: transcendental... Hit: 5 StarsBeing a fan of the work of both Robin Trower and Jack Bruce (why else would I bother to write this?), I admit that I was excited when this came out, yet I was skeptical as well, given that I wasn't crazy about "Truce" and the fact that these guys haven't worked together in quite some time...I am, however, exceedingly impressed with this collection of music..."Seven Moons", in my opinion, is much better than either of their previous collaborations, and moreover, is one of the most inspired recordings that I have heard in years made by anyone...which says a lot considering that these are men well into their 60s and do not have piles of corporate money funding their art (...or perhaps this is related to the quality of this music?). Be that as it may, each of the tunes on "Seven Moons" is quite good and the performances are stunning and at moments even sublime... this recording has the rare quality of translating the chemistry of three people in a room filled with inspiration...Bravo!
Free Music Review: Solid Effort For Both Hit: 5 StarsIf you're a Robin Trower and/or Cream fan you should enjoy this. The slow songs sound like something from the "For Earth Below" era. Very slow relaxed blues playing. The uptempo stuff is still blues based and Trower still retains the same style, tone and still likes his wah wah pedal. This album probably won't become the classic that "Bridge of Sighs" is but it's definitely a good sign that Trower hasn't sold out.
If you liked Trower and Bruce you'll like this. They have their own little personal touches. Jack Bruce's vocals are distinctly his own as is the distinct sound that Trower gets from his Strat. Both are very stylistic which says something in and of itself.
Also I keep thinking about something that someone in line at a Trower concert said about the collaboration: "It sounds like Cream with Robin Trower on guitar instead of Eric Clapton." She meant that in a complimentary way and so do I.
Free Music Review: trower/bruce disappoint Hit: 1 StarsI am a lifelong Trower fan and this album is a huge disappointment. It sounds like a collection of bad jack bruce demos with Trower noodling in the background. They cut every corner in production. A real shame from two legends.
Even BLT was better than this. Robin, It's been a long time crossing the bridge to Jack Bruce...
Free Music Review: Long Overdue......... Hit: 4 StarsThis is a long overdue offering from Robin Trower with Jack Bruce. I hesitated buying this one because the previous offerings from this partnership seemed in some ways, at least, a war of styles and barring a few exceptions, never really fully gelled. When they hit something that worked, it worked very well, but that was few and far between. This, however, is an exceptional work of retro sounds but with enough modern nuances to make it unique. You can tell RT is RT and JB is JB, but this time around they got it right. A very listenable CD. Long time fans will be pleased. I doubt it will win any new fans but, then, that is their loss. It's not a landmark offering like Bridge of Sighs but it is well worth the purchase. Some have been critical saying it's predictable but they would probobly be equally as critical if it strayed any further from it's signature sound foundation than it does. It's your money, do as you want, but if you don't check this you lose out.
