Free Music Review: A surfing poet

Jack Johnson, the surfing poet. The novelty of it drew me in. Don Ho meets Leonard Cohen? No, way better than that!
This collection is about as laid back as it gets. However, don't be fooled; Johnson has some great insight about the fruitlessness of this fairy tale war, the insanity of today's media and the misplaced self confidence of people today. Steadfastness does not equal being right; Johnson sums this up on the second song in a way that lacks accusation but packs a delicate punch.
The more romantic songs makes you want to grab your honey's hand and jump on a plane, or at least skip work to stay in bed. Johnson tips his hand on where he is in life, singing about " ten years ago" and what has transpired, but there is romantic wisdom contained in the ballads. Lovely music. With spring on the horizon I can think of no better companion.

I love this CD. I play it mostly in the car or while I make dinner, it's so mellow and always seems to put me in a lighthearted mood. This is not necessarily an easy task. It's romantic as well. I absolutely love this CD. I don't buy a lot of CDs, because I refuse to buy them unless I like the majority of the songs on the CD. So many seem to have 1 or 2 hits and the rest are uninteresting or downright boring. However, I completely enjoyed this CD and honestly love almost every song on the album.
It's also great in that it's the type of music you can enjoy in about any type of situation, being neither too relaxing, too loud, or too stimulating. I recommend this album frequently to friends, especially those who enjoy accoustical guitar.

His songs exude the same warm, mellow glow of his native Hawaiian sands. His words and chords lap and foam with the same gentle regularity as the waves he surfs. His messages are as languorous and misty as sea winds through palm fronds. It's Jack Johnson, and he's "In Between Dreams."
The title is hokey, admit it, and the songs sometimes blush with the same apple-cheeked cutesiness. As skillful and fully-realized as a Norman Rockwell painting, this is a well-executed, niche-comfy album, a down-home soul-hug, a marshmallow-toastin' bonfire that simmers without burning out.
Yes, but is it art?
I'll side-step that question by saying that, without question, Johnson's style of simple, unadorned progression makes for a pretty good song. In the case of this album, though, it's the same song, over and over. Distinctions are rare; for example, the playful reggae flavor of "Staple It Together" sets it apart, but not too far apart. Beyond that though (and the French-hued "Belle") this record is all one consistent hue, a honey-yellow of laid-back lyricalness.
Perhaps that's the point. It's obvious from the overall tone that Johnson doesn't want to do anything but shine a little sun, and sure he does that well. There's always something to be said for achieving your goals. But in the grand scheme of things, this record's goals aren't anything monumental.
After all, you've seen one Norman Rockwell painting, you've seen them all.

This was the first CD I listen to by Jack Johnson. I loved it SO much I bought his two previous albums. Great lyrics, great voice and guitar! Easy listening, upbeat, sad, happy all on one great CD! Highly recomend!
