Free Music Review: On and On Hit: 5 Stars
Jack Johnson's newest release is from the vein of Brushfire Fairytales, but can still please any listener, old and new. JJ has developed a formula for his writing, and if it isn't broke then don't fix it. Cookie Jar shows violence from our youth as a result of the media in Cookie Jar, singing "you can't blame me says the media man/i wasn't the one who came up with the plan/i just point that camera at what the people want to see/it's a two way mirror and you can't blame me". Dreams be dreams is nice ballad stating "her dreams are dreams/all this living is so much harder than it seems/but girl don't let your dreams be dreams". Holes To Heaven, familiar to fans as Stars off the Brushfire Fairytales demo cd, has a driving bass/vocal melody that will make it an instant favorite, at least for me it was. It reminds me of Pulp's song Mile End which I know of only as being off the Trainspotting Soundtrack. Overall this cd is absolutley fantastic. Songs like Taylor, Tommorrow Morning, Gone, and Rodeo Clowns all offer an easily catchy sound that is owned by JJ. On and On, along with Brushfire Fairytales are 2 great offering from JJ that noone should pass up.
Free Music Review: understated overachiever Hit: 5 Stars
something interesting about this album ( something jack has said ) is that they borrowed a lot of ideas from a tribe called quests "low end theory". when you listen to this album, i definitely does not soud like a hip hop lp, but you can see the influence. i really love this guys music, so my review is going to subjective, but jack is a great musician. every one of his songs is the real deal, an uncompromised work of art. jack is technically not the greatest guitar player ever, is no the best singer, does not make extrememely "clever" arrangements, but his whole album, i repeat, his whole album, bleeds with soul. this is the special kind of music that is made without pretense, without hidden motives, and seemingly without much effort. jack says that if his music career phases out, that he will just keep making music for his friends, like he originally intended. i was at a concert of his back in l.a. last year, and i kid yelled out from the front row, "be my friend jack! " man, he just smiled while still playing his guitar, stopped singing, and said," you dont have to ask, i already am."
Free Music Review: One of the best albums of 2003 Hit: 5 Stars
Like Ani DiFranco, Jack Johnson reminds you of the power of folk music. Jack Johnson has a feel for funk music that seeps into every song, making this album laid back and danceable at the same time. His voice is the perfect counterpart to the songs. He has a deep, expressive voice. The lyrics are impressive, too. Jack Johnson combines a smart sense of humor with political awareness. He's even thrown in a few biographical songs --- he sings about women who have lost their way and neighbors who have trouble getting along. The combination of all of these elements makes this a five-star album. Jack Johnson knows how to write a catchy song, but he keeps things simple and short, never overdoing it. He'd rather stop and get to the next song than bore you. You can listen to this album all day long without getting sick of it --- and without finding a single bad song. And one more thing: If you buy this CD, you'll be supporting an independent artist. Unlike most musicians, Jack Johnson owns the copyright on his songs. If you buy this CD, you'll cut out the record company middle men.
Free Music Review: A very special album!!! Hit: 5 Stars
In the second album of his career "On and On", Jack Johnson has become highly acclaimed making his unmistakable music: the acoustic guitar with the easy rythms.
Fiften years ago, the Hawain singer was just a surfer who loved beaches and nature. He was inspired by these to write the songs of this album, which includes relaxing songs perfect to be heard at any time. Actually it was while surfing that he met Ben Harper, the one who introduced him to the acoustic world by inviting him to open his concerts. He also counted on another friend's help: Donavan Frankenreiter, who wrote a song with him called "Free", which stands out in Donavan's album. Other tracks which also deserve to be mentioned are "Taylor" and "Cookie Jar".
Because of this influence and having the same great rendition, Jack Johnson can sometimes sound like Ben Harper, Donavan, Disparatch, John Mayer and others from this category. But the ones who have listened to any Jack's music, know how good and unique it is. So if you don't have this album yet, drive down the record shop and buy it now!!!
