Free Music Notes for Jaco Pastorius

Free Music Review: Who Loves Ya'
Hit: 5 Stars

Everything has been said about this man already and yet it will never all be said about him. Everyone I've had listen to Jaco is immediately astounded, even though this album is nearly 30 years old (older than Jaco was at the recording session). It never gets stale and it even reaches out to my own young boys of 10 and 12. Jaco should be entered into the music history dictionaries along with other great virtuosos.

This debut album is certainly a must and should not be missed from anyone's collection, no matter what your taste in music.

Good follow-up is to read about his life and family through the family website(s), the biography written about him and to explore his other work with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Pat Mathaney, etc...

Free Music Review: Amazing Bass
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a bass player, and when I started to improvise I searched for a good Jazz Bassists CDs to listen and learn from. The first CD I bought was this one, and I was charmed with Jaco's creamy-silky-soft sound. My teacher once said to me "An average player that's using good equipment, would sound like a great player". Here we have a Bass Genius, a truly amazing bass players with superb control on his instrument and in addition he's using the best equipment possible: a 1960 fretless Fender Jazz Bass and a 1962 fretted one. I belive the amps were great (After all, it's a recording studio!), so the result is that the album is a blast! Indeed a must have for any bassist and for any Jazz Lover.

Free Music Review: A Must-Have for Electric (Fretless) Bass Players
Hit: 5 Stars

Though a must have for electric (fretless) bass players, many will enjoy Jaco Pastorius's solo debut. His amazing technique and intonation is coupled with his beautiful composition skills to create wonderful pieces. My personal favorites are "Portrait of Tracy" and "Continuum." However, some may find his music to be out of their taste. The music's focus is on the fretless bass guitar, and the opening track (and others) may seem boring or bland for lack of accompaniment. Once one begins listening, it becomes very easy to appreciate Jaco's tremendous skill, and understand the influence he holds to this day.

Free Music Review: If only he wasn't dead...
Hit: 5 Stars

Jaco is without a doubt the best bass player I've ever heard. He could have wiped the floor with Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Jason Newsted, and any other bass player you can think of, plus a few solo guitarists I've heard. Besides being the Yngwie Malmsteen of bass, minus the ego, Jaco's lightning-fast riffage and the use of both right and left hand harmonics make listening to this cd both an educational experience and a trip. If you aren't blown away after hearing the first track, I doubt you know anything about music at all. I wonder how far he would have gone if he hadn't pulled a Jimi Hendrix.

Free Music Review: Cliff Burton??!! BAHH!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the greatest bass player of all time's first solo album. I LOVE Flea a lot and he is the master of slapping but I have to say Jaco takes it all in terms of quality and control. What I hated is on the Flea message boards where people shredded Flea and said Cliff Burton was the real bass genious, NO! not true at all, Cliff just used distortion and wah to hide his sound, he never played anything big and true like Flea and Jaco did. Cliff burton was in Metallica! METALLICA! That tells you he can't be that great.
