Free Music Review: Could Have Been Much Better (Rating: 6 out of 10- -3.0 stars)
Hit: 3 Stars

When Jadakiss was dropping a solo album, I was hyped as hell when I heard. After scoring so many hit singles with the LOX ("Money, Power, Respect", "Ryde Or Die [Chick]", etc.), he steps up to the plate as the first member of his crew to come out with a solo album.

Given that, back in '01, I was under the impression that this album was pushed back on Interscope, seeing that he released two singles before the album dropped ("Put Yo Hands Up" and "Knock Yaself Out"). The problem with this is that it seemed like hes gotten a little lazy with the lyrics. As the editorial reviewer mentioned, the album is flooded with Jada's consistant gun talk, which makes him seem like hes saying absolutely nothing new. The weak Aerosmith inspired "Jada's Got A Gun", and "I'm A Gangsta" shows no improvement since he was put on.

Jada pulls himself together on the tracks like "Show Discipline" with Nas. Then theres the classic with Styles P. on "We Gon Make It" (which shared the same beat with Ras Kass). The laid back "Crusin" is kinda great, which features Snoop Dogg. "Kiss Is Spittin" is wonderful, featuring Nate Dogg. I'll even "Here We Go Again" featuring DMX is nice, especially when Jada takes a shot a Beanie Sigel ("...the doc said I had to stop eating red meat, because I ate too many Beanie-Mac's"). Jada ends off the album on a positive note with "Keep Your Head Up".

Other guest appearances do very little, such as "It's Time I See You" with the majority of the Ruff Ryders, but everyone sounds weak. "What You Ride For" featuring Yung-Wun, Fiend, and Eightball makes Jada seems out of place (Note to any up and comming NY rappers: Stay off the down south stuff. It's NEVER worked.)

Overall, Kiss Of Death is a solid album. It could have been much better lyrically. The production here is very good too. This one is recommended if you're a fan of Jada, or the LOX. If you want to hear their best, I highly recommend Jada's sophomore album Kiss of Death, or Styles Gangster & A Gentleman, or Sheek's Walk Witt Me. Peace.

Kiss tha Game Goodbye Poster

One would think that Jadakiss's fleeing Puff Daddy's record label to renew his membership in the reputable Ruff Ryder camp (alongside talents DMX and Eve) would guarantee greater things to come. However, Kiss tha Game Goodbye exposes Jada's lyrical limitations rather than magnifying his talents. The album kicks off with the keyboard-heavy Swizz Beatz-produced "Jada's Got a Gun." The hook is sung to the tune of Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun," but it's not so much the unoriginal chorus that grates on the nerves as it is Jadakiss's narrow gun-centric lyrical focus as he brags: "I got a gun wit' 200 shots / I'm the reason you moved your family to a whole new other block." Students of the rap game will get a healthy sampling of Jada's unparalleled diction and punch lines that flow over great beats supplied by A-list producers (Timbaland, Neptunes, and DJ Premier in this case). There's little diversity in his lyrics as he boasts in "I'm a Gangsta" "my bullets is bisexual cuz they hit niggas and bitches," while in the Snoop Dogg-aided "Cruisin'" where he threatens to spread "bullets around like chicken pox." "We Gonna Make It" is an obvious chartbuster despite utilizing the same music as Ras Kass did in the "Home Sweet Home" underground headbanger. Likewise, the album is worth purchasing to peep the Beanie Sigel dis track "Un-Hunh!" However, some will tire of Jada's gun-talk and serial-philandering routine. Jadakiss has claimed to be the best rapper on the scene since the Notorious B.I.G. passed away, but if he keeps this routine up it might be time to Kiss tha Fame goodbye. --Dalton Higgins
