Free Music Review: Whoa...Don't Leave Without It

I have been following Jaheim's career off and on since the inception of Ghetto Love. This is the album you don't leave without it in the record store. I actually reluctantly bought this album, but I am glad that I whimsically purchased "Another Round." My reluctance was due that in the past Jaheim's album continued the trend of the thug/R&B album "Ghetto Love." Although "Ghetto Love" is my favorite of his work cause I thought that the cd had a great concept of a thug trying to get his life together. So the cussing and thugging was an essential component to his debut, which made him unique cause during that time R.Kelly picked up that path as well. Soon after that every R&B album that came out in the 2000's had to have that Hip Hop marriage in order to create that edge. Unfortunatly for me as I grew older I got tired that R&B lost it's purity. My high rating for "Another Round" is because pure R&B in mainstream is back and we have Jaheim to thank. This album has no cussing and much of that thugging mentality, and it sounded like as if Teddy Pendergrass channeled that "I love women" spirit in to Jaheim's new album. It has an old school feel to it as you expect, but the songs fit Jaheim perfectly. The melodies are better than his previous albums, and songs like "Otha Half" even have a Stevie harmonica flavor in it. Some real guitar playing to have the organic feel to his velvety voice. I am glad he did not go for the over the top synth hooks we have going on in R&B music now. It's a grown up album, and this album is now replacing "Ghetto Love" as my personal favorite.

With his smooth, sonorous tone, Jaheim is the forerunner and torch-carrier of today's soul-originated R&B. A vocalist in the tradition of such greats as Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross, he signed with former Naughty By Nature beat man Kay Gee's Divine Mill record label in 2000. Jaheim released three albums over five years: his 2001 debut, Ghetto Love; 2002's sophomore set, Still Ghetto - both of which reached RIAA platinum status; and 2006's Ghetto Classics. During that time, he also scored nominations for the BET and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2007, the chart-topping artist returned with his Atlantic Records debut, The Makings of a Man.
