Free Music Notes for James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits!

Free Music Review: Jump Back 'n Kiss Myself
Hit: 5 Stars

Oh, man...James Brown...oh, he is super bad...but bad in a good way, not bad in a bad way and if you really needed me to explain to you what I meant, maybe you shouldn't even be considering this album. That's it...slowly put down the James Brown and go back to your Barry Mannilow and your Christopher Cross...

This music is crazy, funky, and my wife is even instructed to play "Sex Machine" at my memorial. This music is actually a great way to overcome the noon-time blahs. You know those times when your soul wants to party but your feet are dragging? Take a couple of hits from this CD and be prepared to get funkified. It'll make those lulls in the day alive without the caffeine jitters. Who needs stimulants when JB is in the house.

I used to work night crew at a grocery store and this CD got me through many a long night. Of course, my corn fed, tight underwear wearin', Metallica induced co-workers didn't enjoy it too much, but so what? There will always be people who aren't funked up.

Pity.

But please, get this...really...I haven't lied to you before in 140+ reviews and I'm not about to now. I'm waiting till I get in the 200s to start lying...

just kidding...

Get the CD and turn your frown upside down with the help of James Brown.

Free Music Review: GET DOWN WITH HIS BAD SELF!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

JAMES BROWN-20 ALL TIME GREATEST HITS!: No self respecting lover of modern music would be caught DEAD without a copy of the Black Elvis' funkiest stuff in his or her collection, and here are the goods! Like the album's immensely entertaining liner notes state, only the white King himself had more chart hits, but we're talkin' 'bout the REAL king here, natch, the KING OF SOUL! The Mother Like No Other! The Godfather! The Hardest Workin' Man in Sho' Biz! Soul Bro' Numero Uno! The cat with the coolest moves, the tightest band, and the most paint peelin' SCREAM in all of the entertainment world! Among his many other accomplishments, JB was both a funk AND a rap pioneer, and not surprisingly, the latter genre's most sampled artist. Brown's biggies, from the early slow groover PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE to dance floor-fillers I GOT YOU (I FEEL GOOD) and PAPA'S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG to funk overloaders SEX MACHINE and GET UP OFFA THAT THING, are here in all their cold sweat-soaked splendor. If you make only ONE soul purchase, this is THE one to own---Brown is to RNB what the Fab Four are to rock, Bob Marley is to reggae, and Hank Senior is to country. PLAY IT LOUD! He's black and he's proud.

RATING: FIVE Music Review: Don't Ask Why or How...Just Get This Disc!
Hit: 5 Stars You can have your Elvis Presley, but for my time and money, you can't beat James Brown for stage prescence, charisma, tight grooves, and cultural impact. His influence in popular music is beyond calculation, and his songs deliver a rush of energy unlike anything you will ever hear. Diehards will probably steer towards his box set, but this single disc collection is just as good. You know the hits, and if you don't, you've definitely heard their samples: "Sex Machine," "The Payback," "Get Up Offa That Thing" and so forth. Serious jams and real insruments with the Godfather himself grunting and screaming throughout. John Lennon once said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Well, even visionaries like Lennon can be wrong. Along with Chuck Berry and Little Richard, James Brown is one of the key founding fathers of popular music, and this disc is a great display of his many hits. Priceless and timeless.

Free Music Review: Brown's Grooves Will Leave You In a 'Cold Sweat'
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the absolute best single-disc collection of the Godfather of Soul's first twenty years, from 1956's plaintive "Please, Please, Please" to 1976's funky "Get Up Offa That Thing." In between you get all six of his top ten hits --including classics like "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (Pt. 1)" and "Cold Sweat (Pt. 1)"--and other singles which charted in the Top 40. As a primer, 20 All-Time Greatest Hits is a great introduction. My only complaint is the lack of chronological sequencing. For example, you get 1971's "Make It Funky (Pt 1)" coming before 1959's "Try Me" (Brown's first Hot 100 hit). It's a bit confusing. I have the Star Time box set on cassette, but I opted for this single disc when I upgraded to CD--it's got most of Brown's biggest hits. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Free Music Review: NOW I Get It
Hit: 5 Stars

I got this CD on a whim, looking to expand my musical interests. I had always "kind of" liked what I'd heard of Brown. Now, I know why.

He's having fun, delivering tight, enjoyable music. It's infectuous. And, I can hear the roots of some of my favorite music. For example, the muted/rapid/funky picking effect that runs through this music also runs through much of Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense." At one point on that album (Or was it the movie?) the Heads repeat "James Brown" several times. And, I think that Led Zeppelin also pays homage, of sorts, on The Crunge from "Houses of the Holy," where they use the same guitar technique, and make reference to "the bridge," a point of reference several times among Brown's tracks.

If you've ever enjoyed anything by James Brown, you can't lose with this album.
