Free Music Notes for Live at the Apollo 1962Free Music Review: Finest Live album you'll ever hear Hit: 5 Stars
It doesn't get any better than this. The raw energy is astounding. Must have for any JB fan. To tell you the truth, I am also more of a funk fan, regarding his material and recieved this as a gift. After listening to it though, wow. As to the reviewer that said its missing a track, I'm not so sure about that. My first exposure to this was a vinyl copy on the original King label, that a coworker found and purchased for me at a used record store, I don't see 'Signed, sealed, and delivered' Not flame, just a note. By the way, JB did put on one of the best shows I had ever seen(For free at that, at a festival in Macon, Georgia), the hype is true. After seeing him live my appreciation for this slab oly grew. Only two live albums come close to this one, and they are Johnny Cashes two Prison performances(Folsom prison, and San Quentin). No, it's not the r&B or soul, but if you want some more great music from the 60s performed with spirituality and passion, then check them out.
Free Music Review: Shout and Shimmy With Mr. Dynamite Hit: 5 Stars
Though recorded in October, 1962, this record didn't make it out till the beginning of the following year and it was an immediate hit. I couldn't get enough of it. James Brown has a voice and a style that defies pegging into any style or genre. Rock, Blues, R & B, this record is all of that with a little jazz thrown in.
Years later I would be fortunate enough to meet James Brown, fortunate enough to be present at one of his sessions, fortunate enough to be on one of his records, but back in 1963 I was only a high school kid in a an all white town in an all white school in Southern California who loved this music and who clapped right along with the audience between the tracks. This is one of those rare live recordings that put a stamp on the future of music. This record is as tightly recorded as any studio record and the very, very enthusiastic audience was obviously blown away by Mr. Dynamite as I still am every time I hear him sing.
Free Music Review: THIS IS ONE LIVE ALBUM I'LL GIVE A SECOND LISTEN TO Hit: 5 Stars
now i am not keen on live albums because then i'll become too much of a skeptic. however, this album is an exception. first of all, IT'S secondly, that one elongated song that i cannot think listening to those ladies scream and GOODNESS!!!!! that song alone is enough proof for me that mr. brown was comatose when it came to the stage!!!! don't think michael jackson, usher, justin timberlake, janet jackson, and plenty, plenty others. if you recorded it, then out on the BET awards that year when they were honoring james and michael came out and surprised him. this is just a sample though, remember that.
Free Music Review: The King of Soul proving He's THE KING! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all it should be noted that whoever the people are who are writing that this is not the original material are wrong. I have the original LP and the cd, and I can assure you this is the original except for the added songs of course. Maybe those people are UFO abductees or something of that nature.
Now, to the cd. This IS one of the best live albums ever recorded. I played this album so many times I know every note and scream on it by heart. Also, I personally like this album the best of any James Brown album primarily because it is live and so exciting. It has that live feeling which beats a studio recording any time.
So, I DO recommend this cd, and if you never had a Jame Brown cd before, get this one.
Free Music Review: Intensity Of Soul...One Of The Greatest Live Albums Laid Down..RIP Hit: 5 Stars
Whenever I pass by the Apollo,my mind goes back and recalls this recording and as the liner notes make clear this CD released in 1963 is a tidal wave of raw emotion that sold millions without a hit single, JB's 1st hit album and was voted internationally by critics as one of the Top 20 albums of all time..with reason.
This CD is the meat and potatoes of JB, a representation of his live show that brought him into the spotlight on this cold night with a hot band.
All his accolades, The Hardest Working Man In Show Business, Godfather Of Soul,Soul Brother # 1 are all here on this 30 minute live CD.
The CD itself was remastered in 1990, prepared from the original, undubbed stereo master tape.
