James Brown-Live At The Apollo ****

First I just want to say that James Brown has had better albums, and better live albums as well. I can see why Live At The Apollo receives such high acclaim but for me personally I don't enjoy it as much as most. I love live albums, getting to hear what a legend you may have never seen live is amazing.

Live At The Apollo does not live up to what I always imagined James Brown being like. For one sometimes during the album the lyrics are not that audible, like on 'Think' for example. This is one of his all time great tracks and I don't feel that during this performance he did the song justice. Other performances were better and more memorable. Brown also seems to be out of breath a lot during the performance as well which I know he was a machine on stage but still he was very young during this performance and on later live albums he seems to have held up better.

There are some very good things about the album though. For example the medley during the middle of the album is amazing. Easily the best performance on the album, not a weak point in the long jam. Also James' backing band here is breath taking. This may be the very best his bands have ever sounded live, it is too bad I can't say the same about Brown himself. Lastly for an early performance this is a great set of songs.

What is really cool about Live At The Apollo is that it wasn't supposed to happen. His manager told him not to do it and didn't support him so Brown recorded the whole performance himself. While I'm not saying this is a bad live album, because it really isn't, all I am saying is that Brown has released better, much, much better.

Free Music Review: Black Music Treasure
Hit: 4 Stars

This album is a must have for any R&B music catalog. Black music has been forever changed by the performances and performer on this album in 1962.

During the racially chargered violence of the 60's this performance was an escape from the absolute madness of society, giving the concert goers a night of unbelievalbe entertainment from an unbelievably great performer.

Many artist such as Prince and Michael Jackson were not even born yet, when this concert took place, yet thier careers have flourish behind the influence of James Brown electricfying and near breath taking performances.

The album doesnt get 5 stars because I thought the album's performances were redundant. James performs some of the same songs 3 times in the show. The concert is rather short, less than 1 hour. I'm assuming when you do 300 dates a year you can't afford to have 3 hour concerts.

Great album that will forever stand the test of time. Album of musical history that should be a blue print as to how the 21st centuries artist should create and/or put on live shows.

Look toward Prince and Michael Jackson who emulate James Brown... these two artist from James have influences a life time of music to come.

Free Music Review: Comes close to capturing Brown's onstage energy
Hit: 4 Stars

Let me just start out by saying this isn't the greatest live album. It is influential, and proved that people would pay money to own a live recording, which is the main reason why it's often considored the best. However, there are many subsequent live recordings that are much better than this. However, it's still pretty damn good, and is a fun listen that warrents repeated plays. James Brown's stage show was legendary for his gyrations and refusal to stand still, and you can picture what a good night was like for him with the help of this. It is certainly better than any of his studio albums. The songs themselves are performed greatly, both due to Brown's incredible soul voice and the magnificent back-up band themselves. Worth a purchase, due to it's importance in American popular music.

Free Music Review: A must CD for James Brown fans
Hit: 4 Stars

This live album made plenty of noise when it was released in 1963 but somehow sounds dated today. The raw soul of James Brown is evident throughout the CD, with "Lost Someone" and "I Don't Mind" being the highlights of the performance that night. The other songs, however, are too brief, and the Medley doesn't really work because Brown seems to be racing through his repertoire to finish the set and its hard to believe that the Apollo patrons would have shelled out good money for a 35 minute show. The 1962 live recording was a good start and showed that Brown had tremendous box office appeal. A much better CD is Brown's live performance at the Apollo which was released in 1968.

Free Music Review: Really good; but not the James Brown you're expecting
Hit: 4 Stars

Live at the Apollo 1962 is an excellent disc. It's live; you can hear the crowd goofing around; it's a whole lot of fun.

What I missed when I ordered this disc is that the quintessential James Brown tracks (aka the funk) come after this time period.

This disc is definitely toe-tapping R&B (think Ray Charles from the same time period) and a good time for all. While it wasn't what I had expected, I'm glad I own this disc.
