Free Music Notes for Star TimeFree Music Review: The Comprehensive Box-Set Of The Godfather Of Soul!! Hit: 5 Stars
I had to write this review in lieu of the recent passing
of one of the latter 20th Century's greatest musical innovators!
James Brown was a revolutionary of music, of performance,
and with his bold "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing /
Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" socio-political statements
that came to black america at a time when they were really needed!
This box set is the most comprehensive collection of his
groundbreaking work that I know of!
I've owned this set now for about 14 yrs. and have
played it a billion times probably by now!
Yet it's still fresh, funky, energetic and positive!!--
And yes, it speaks of truth!!
This man was so far ahead of his time, yet OF HIS TIME!
In these last few days since his passing,
his music means even more to me!
He was given a funeral befitting royalty because he WAS ROYALTY!!
God Bless Your Soul Mr. Brown!! (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006)
Your gut-bucket funky grooves, your straight-from-the-heart messages
and your electric stage presence will be studied, emulated
and enjoyed by generations to come!
There'll never be another one!---R.I.P. GODFATHER!!
Free Music Review: It's Too Funky In Here Hit: 5 Stars
This is as close to a complete retrospective of James Brown's legendary recording career from 1956-1984 that will ever be available. The 71 tracks are from original session tapes or the original single and album masters. The sound quality - in particular on the oldest material - is outstanding.
The collection starts with Please, Please, Please (1956) and ends with Unity (Part I), which features Afrika Bambaata on co-vocals.
Some of my favorites are Try Me, Night Train, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (Parts I, II & III), Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue), Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud (Part I), Funky Drummer, Make It Funky (Part I), King Heroin and My Thang.
Along with bassist Bootsy Collins, Brown has worked with many dynamite musicians, led by long-time organist, Bobby Byrd. The saxophonists include Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Michael Brecker & Joe Farrell, with such trombonists as Randy Brecker, Fred Wesley & Jon Faddis bolstering Brown's signature Funk and R&B sounds.
You can count on one hand the true pathfinders in American popular music. There are three individuals who must be on every list; Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and The Godfather of Soul.
Free Music Review: James Brown Just as great today! Hit: 5 Stars
I purchased this CD because I like James Brown's style of music and I've always loved James Brown's music specifically (though I have never really heard music from his early years until this CD set). I have some of his songs scattered on various cassette tapes but I never purchased a James Brown CD or album. So I purchased this set because of the ratings here at Amazon[.com].Here is my recommendation about this CD set. Block a few hours when you get it because you are not going to want to stop listening to it. This thang is "bad!" You are going to play these CDs over and over again and please be in a place where it's OK to jump up and shout and dance because that is what these CD's will entice you to do. I highly recommend this CD set to any James Brown fan and to anyone that likes soul, funk, and even Rhythm and Blues. Get it and enjoy (and you will enjoy them). I liked these so much that I went right out and got another set for my dad...And he loves them. We played them on his surround sound system and it got funky in there indeed. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.
Free Music Review: Excuse me while I do the boogaloo Hit: 5 Stars
I hate box sets.
Most recently, I was extremely disappointed with the Nirvana box--which contains very little of the vital, infectious music that I associate with Nirvana. While it may be unfair to compare Nirvana's b-sides and outtakes to the best material in the James Brown catalogue, I can't help but be underwhelmed by any box set that doesn't have the words "Star Time" printed on the cover.
I don't really even consider this a box set. I think of it as four of my favorite individual cd's. Each cd plays like it was originally intended to be sequenced that way by James Brown his own damned self.
Yes. Discs one and four may not be quite as solid as numbers two and three. But that's a little bit like saying that Abbey Road isn't quite as good as Revolver. It's all good people.
Amazon lists other cd's as the "essential" recordings of James Brown. While Foundations of Funk is an excellent compilation, this is a better place to start your JB education.
Free Music Review: a true original Hit: 5 Stars
this man was making the hottest funk of all time in the late 60's when psychedelic music ruled. "mother popcorn", "super bad", "sex machine", "cold sweat" and "give it up, turnit loose" were not for the faint of heart. this period features a young bootsy collins , the bass lines are spectacular. george clinton knew a good thing when he heard it, recruiting him in the 70's. the early 70's stuff wasn't far behind, "hot pants", "get on the good foot", "there it is", "the payback" and "funky president" being the best. the early 60's material is my least favorite. although there are many great songs such as the overplayed "i got you (i feel good)" and "papa's got a brand new bag". the best thing about this set are the long versions of many of the tracks and no fade in's and out's between part's 1 & 2 and sometimes 3. if you're interested in the original funk, it is essential. also check out all the george clinton/parlaiment/funkadelic/bootsy stuff. clinton is the second best funkmeister.
