Free Music Notes for Star TimeFree Music Review: GOD, James Brown then Bill Gates !!! Hit: 5 Stars
The greatest collection of music ever assembled. James invented R&B along with Ray Charles and then went on to invent Soul and with Papa's Got A Brand New Bag issued in the Funk generation. This collection showcases the genius of JB and the funk as demonstrated by an unbelivable collection of musicians including the great Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Phelps Collins, Cash Waddy, Clyde Stubblefield, Fred Wesley, Jimmy Nolan, The Brecker Brothers, Kenny Burrell, Billy Cobham (drums on King Herion !!) many many others that you wouldn't believe. But when they played wit JB they were simply part of his mind. They played what he said play and they were JB's. I'm so gld that he recently became a part of the "Bowie Bonds" phenonminon with a 35million dollar payday on his 66th birthday. JB also plays a mean organ himself !!! The greatest performer of all times !! My favorite tunes include Sex Machine, Escapism, When You Touch Me, Please and Maybe the Last Time.
Free Music Review: Passion in Music Hit: 5 Stars
One of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century. No one has expressed more passionate humanity, or human passion, in music than James Brown. I only wish I could have seen him live sometime in the 60's or 70's. Instead, I have him on several video tapes. Seeing him sliding across the stage on one foot, throwing the mike stand forward, spinning around just in time to catch it on its way back up--Maaan! Listening to anything on this set of discs will blow your troubles away--right now! My personal favorites are "I'll Go Crazy", "Papa Don't Take No Mess", "Licking Stick", and "Brand New Bag". When I get to be an old white guy, instead of the middle-aged one I am now, I will have my boombox in the nursing home. You'd better believe I'm going to crank out "Star Time" at full volume--I hope they throw me out! Get on the good foot with Mr. Dynamite, the amazing Mr. Please, Please, Please, the hardest working man in show business . . . Huh! Good God, Y'all!
Free Music Review: An astonishing retrospective of the greatest soul musician Hit: 5 Stars
Absolutely the best boxed set I've heard--it's sequenced with real attention to flow and listenability. And it kicks. So hard. Like, disc 3 in particular just makes people's jaws drop when I play it for them--"James Brown did _this_? I need some of his records..." STAR TIME includes the lion's share of his hits (though if it had included all of them it would have had to be a few discs longer--remember, this is a man who hit the charts with every [non-holiday/non-instrumental] single he released for ten years, and he was releasing a single just about every month). In response to somebody's comment below: yes, the first disc is pre-funk stuff. It's AMAZING pre-funk stuff: before he invented funk, James was a phenomenal soul howler. Seriously: if you're not familiar with JB's work, this is an extraordinary survey of his peak years. And SO much fun.
Free Music Review: The King of Soul ....."Good God.....aaooww!!" Hit: 5 Stars
They say Elvis Presley is the "king" ,,,but can Elvis get superbad like James Brown? Can he Dance half as good? Did Elvis work as hard. Elvis couldnt do 8 or 9 minute dance marathons.
Whatever the consensus is...James Brown is a legend. All the new rap and dance and hip hop cant hold a candle to the energy and spirit James transmitted through the microphone. I always get energy when I listen to the Star Time Box Set. It is definately worth the money you spend. All his best songs are extended to original length,,the way it should be. I cannot dis any of his music, he is just that good. His highlight years were 1968-72.
He really worked hard, you can tell just by listening. His music doesnt grow stale because it is so dynamic and real. In any case dont waste time reading the reviews if you dont have the box set..... go and buy, it's worth it.. trust me.
Free Music Review: Grammy Time Box Set- How did they get so much funk in a box? Hit: 5 Stars
I have an extensive collection of cds (if I do say so myself) including a number of box sets. THIS IS THE BEST BOX SET I HAVE EVER HEARD. I put this thing on and I could not leave the room, I was dancing and singing like I hadn't done in 20 years. Everytime I moved to the machine to cut it off -the music made me stop. If you like James Brown and if you can only get one compliation of his work THIS IS THE ONE. There it is, mother popcorn, licking stick, doing it to death, can't stand it, hot pants, soul power and, believe it or not even MORE- so much funk it should be declared a deadly weapon. The godfather strikes again and again and again with his superbad, papa's got a brand new bag, havin a funky good time self 'cause it he made it that way-FUNKY. Don't miss this one and don't let your friends miss it either!!!!!
