Free Music Review: Back to the fifties
Hit: 3 Stars

James Hunter is a man out of the past. Every song on this album could have come straight out of the Fifties (think Ricky Nelson, Sam Cooke), though the music has updated jazz touches. His lyrics are cleverly crafted and the title tune, in particular, is an instant classic. Clarence Clemons contributes strong, jazzy sax solos. Each track is good on its own -- but unfortunately the band's sound remains so similar from track to track that it gets annoying; I find myself skipping to my favorites rather than listening to the whole disk in sequence. I'll definitely keep listening, though.

Free Music Review: James is an original...not a copy cat
Hit: 4 Stars

I caught James Hunter on a late night tv show and ordered this cd immediately. Normally, I'll like a couple of songs on a cd but I always play all of the songs on his every time. James has that great soul and blues flavor of Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson but he his sound comes out fresh and original..he is not a copy cat making remakes. More than just a singer, he is a musician and songwriter too and his love of music shines through his songs.
I just ordered his cd "Believe What I Say" and can't wait for it to arrive.

Free Music Review: I like my blues singers like I like my coffee
Hit: 3 Stars

but James sounds very natural "for a white guy". His music lives in a British neighborhood populated by blues, a little caribbean, and early rock & soul that I find unique and pleasing. Based on this album, I don't consider him the guitar hero some folks make him out to be but he has his own style and the good sense not to over-play which is important to this sort of "laid back" style of music. The horn charts are effectively simple but man, r&b sax solos are difficult. You have to try to keep that down home feel without sounding like you just need to do some more shedding. Overall for this disc: 3 & 1/2 stars. Okay, the previous was written 8/6/07. Now for the 10/1/07 update: Saw him at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September and wow, what a wonderful performer! Absolute charm to burn. The kind of artist you don't mind your girlfriend saying "I wish we were up closer" about 'cause he seems like such an upright (you should pardon the expression) bloke. He's one of those people that's found a particular era from the past they feel most comfortable with and remind us that all great art is timeless. In a live setting he cuts loose with some guitar theatrics but always in service to the music and not over-the-top like some egomaniacal rock star. So if you've seen him live, four stars for this disc as a souvenir of his excellent band's performance.

Free Music Review: Thank you fellow reviewers

This is all as promised and more. One of the best SOUL releases I have ever heard. What a voice and what a songwriter. If there is a better singer / songwriter in the genre, I have not heard him. This spans age and gender gaps in one single bound. No qualifiers necessary. If you like music, buy it. Irrespective of the genre you'r into, this will get your toe's tapping and if you have a spouse, hers will be tapping right along.
One of my best recent purchases !!!!!

Free Music Review: MONO MANIAC
Hit: 5 Stars

It's rare to find a new CD where both the music and the recording set the standard for quality. James Hunter's music speaks for itself, but I doubt MP3 downloaders will be able to fully appreciate how good the sound quality is. This recording has a retro feel but with rich tone, vibrant dynamics, and the presence of a live event. This is a tribute to the vintage analog recording techniques used at Toe Rag Studios in London. However, I haven't heard anyone mention that the recording is Monaural, rather than the usual Stereo. When these Brits go retro, they really do it right. This is the kind of recording that makes me glad to have high end audio gear. People Gonna Talk is highly recommended for both audiophiles and music lovers.
