Free Music Review: Funkyspacedisconewwvaverocksoulmusic
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the best album Jamiroquai's ever put out... hands down. "Dynamite" is long overdue. It had been a long 4 years since the release of "A Funk Odyssey", which to hardcore fans was Jami's most disappointing release. To me, it wasn't bad. It was just experimental, so it wasn't as great as the 1st four albums were. Looking back on this unique group, the first album of theirs that I bought was "Travelling Without Moving" a couple years after it came out. I listened to that album non-stop. It was amazing. And then "Synkronized" (my former favorite after "Dynamite") came out a month later and I was ecstatic because I was getting even more from this amazing group. Again, awesome music. I eventually went through their back catalogue and realized they put out 2 other great albums before that (I had seen "Space Cowboy" on MTV back in 1995 and turned it off real fast for some reason beyond me). Then... "A Funk Odyssey" came out. It was okay, but as a fan, you have to admit it was below Jay Kay's standards with its cold, Daft Punk feel. So is "Dynamite" more of the same... or is it a step backwards into Jamiroquai's glory days? Well, this album is not only a progression of the styles presented on "A Funk Odyssey", but it's also a conglomeration of the styles presented on all of their warmer, more organic albums. Does it work? Heck yeah, it does. What I personally like about this album is that I had fun identifying what each song reminds me of from their older catalouge. For instance, "Dynamite" reminded me of "Little L", "Travelling Without Moving", and "Mr. Moon" all in one fell swoop. The best thing about this album is that it covers so many styles like their breakthrough album "Travelling Without Moving" did. And with that eclecticism, there's a song on the album for everybody (no complaining allowed). You have disco, smooth R&B, jazz, rock, new wave, house, balladry, and even a touch of reggae/latin in one song. And if there's anything Jamiroquai is known for, it's being all over the board by flirting with any type of genre. With that said, moving on to what stands out on the album is... practically every song. "Starchild" is THE BEST SONG JK HAS EVER WRITTEN. That song alone gives this album 5 stars because of its melody and lyrical similarity to the political JK of old. "Soul Education" used to be my favorite Jami song ever, but "Starchild" trumps any song they've ever composed prior to it. Some people might think that's going too far, but it's not. The song was so good that I literally teared up because it sounded like vintage Jamiroquai, only 10x better. Other standouts include "Feels Just Like It Should" (different sound for them), "Dynamite", "7 Days in Sunny June", and "World That He Wants" (although some may say that this doesn't have any place on the album, it's classic Jami). Of course however... there's always a downside to an album, and one of them is the use of Daft Punkesque guitar riffs, which were overused on "AFO". They get grating after a while. If they sounded more like what was on "Starchild", they'd be more tolerable. I also didn't care for the mindless disco of "Don't Give Hate A Chance". I like the melody and heaviness of it, but not the vocal arrangement. Another disco song, "Time Won't Wait", sounds like a reject from Incognito's last album. And my BIGGEST gripe is that the glue that held the group together, Toby Smith, has left the group. Why? Who knows. But I suppose that doesn't matter because new keyboardist Matt Johnson more than captures that quintessential sound that the band is known for, with his minor key melodies complementing JK's jazzy vocals. And at least Derrick McKenzie and Sola are still hanging around. All in all, this album is leaps and bounds beyond what a typical Jamiroquai album is. And I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it a few days ago. I don't really know what else to say about this album except DON'T download it. It's worth your money for sure.

? Entire album in Enhanced PCM Stereo ? "Feels Just Like It Should" video ? Making of "Feels Just Like It Should" ? Interview with Jay Kay about the making of the album

Jason Kay melds his longtime '70s fixations with '80s style synths on Dynamite, Jamiroquai?s first record since 2001's A Funk Odyssey. It's been a long time since the acid jazz/funk hit "Virtual Insanity" (1996's Traveling Without Moving, to be exact), and even though the band never became the huge hit machine they seemed destined to become, they've continued to put out solid work. Odyssey and 1999's Synkronized showed off Kay's dexterity with this material, mining urban dance grooves from a goldmine of Motown, Stevie Wonder and far-ranging disco and soul. Dynamite keeps going, constructing an exuberant club vibe out of R&B styles, but also borderline electro ("Electric Mistress"), jumpy Squeeze-style pop ("Black Devil Car") and soulful, smooth nostalgia ("Seven Days In Sunny June"). A would-be guilty pleasure, only without the guilt, Kay's musical obsessions combine with his burgeoning talent on Dynamite to create another winner. --Matthew Cooke
