Free Music Review: PLEASED TO MEET YOU...
Hit: 5 Stars

This was my first intro to Jane's. A friend in junior high school gave this to me as a Christmas gift. At the time I did not take him seriously as a friend and when he gave me this album I thought, "What in the hell was he thinking?" I figure now that he was trying to share something he loved with me, but I was young and insensitive and did not yet have the best developed sense of taste yet. What can I say?

I shelved the album for two years or so, and then one day, I listened to it. By this time, the friend had descended into some netherworld of drugs (or something!) and was long gone as a friend, but I still credit him for the introduction. What a mindblowing album this is. I usually hate live albums, but this is exceptional and quite stunning, really. "Trip Away" is powerful and extreme, as is "Pigs in Zen"... and to this day "I Would For You" is one of the most exquisite songs I have ever heard. I never tire of hearing it. "My Time" is just proof of Jane's Addiction's varied musical talents. They cannot really be pigeonholed into one category or another. They were bigger than that. "Jane Says" is just brilliant, and the treatments of "Rock 'n'Roll" and "Sympathy" here are also nothing less than brilliant. Jane's was an amazing band at the time they came along and opened the door to a new musical era. As another reviewer said, they built a bridge... And thanks to Jeremy for the introduction.

Free Music Review: Just great music...
Hit: 5 Stars

To call Jane's Addiction's debut album "punk" as the Amazon house reviewer did is not a correct statement. While there are some elements of punk, there are also elements of many other kinds of music. Jane's Addiction has never fit into any genre. This album (as with their other albums) is basically just great music.
The highlights are the rockin' Libertarian anthem "1%" and the absolutely gorgeous "I Would For You" and "My Time." Personally, I don't like the early version of "Jane Says" as much as the one that appeared on Nothing's Shocking because Perry's voice is much rougher and raspier on this one.
While the first 4 songs will make you wanna rock out and jump around, the last 6 songs are pretty mellow, with the exception of "Chip Away," which is just plain interesting and hard to describe.
I don't really understand why someone would describe Jane's version of "Sympathy" as "dubious." It is a lot less dubious than many other peoples' covers of classic rock songs. I like Jane's "Sympathy" much better than the Rolling Stones'version. I also enjoy their cover of "Rock n Roll" more than the original. (Yes, probably because I'm a big Jane's fan.)
I highly recommend this album. It's nice to get a taste of Jane's Addiction oh so long ago.

Free Music Review: A Great Debut and (Suprise) another Must Have by Janes
Hit: 5 Stars

Isn't it unusual for a band to release a live debut? Well, after you hear this you'll understand why. This recording captures the band at their most uninhibited and intimate selves. And it sounds so great for a live recording. How old was Dave Navarro when they recorded this, like 20? He's unbelieveable. I just love the opening track, Trip Away. That guitar solo by Navarro just goes on forever and you never want it too stop. The band also does worthy live versions of Pigs in Zen and Jane Says that hold up to the studio versions on Nothing's Shocking. The second side here has an abrupt change in mood. They seem to have put away the electrics for a separately recorded accoustic show. However, that doesn't detract from the quality in that Rock N Roll and Sympathy are great covers that are very much Janes Addiction-ized from the originals. But Chip Away is silly and awfull and should have been left off. Nevertheless, it's A great preview of what's to come in the remarkable bands terribly short career. I would rate this tied for second with Nothing Shocking and behind Ritual.

Free Music Review: Almost as Essential as Any Album from Jane's
Hit: 5 Stars

A fantastic album, mostly recorded live (I assume there were studio overdubs because I can hear, for example, acoustic and electric guitars being played simultaneously) complete with a small audience of friends and fans cheering them on. Dave Navarro's phenomenal talent on guitar is fully evident and Perry Farrell's sandpaper whine is glorious. Great bass and drums, too. As great as this is, though, they amazingly got better with each album until their masterpiece RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL (their most recent "comeback album" isn't quite up to par but there's some good stuff on it).

Standouts include "Whores," "Pigs in Zen," and the surprisingly sweet "I Would for You." Another highlight is the reworked, semi-acoustic version of the Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil." Navarro's electric guitar at the end sounds downright eerie, and Farrell sounds like evil personified. "Chip Away" closes out the album with intense tribal drumming and tripped-out guitar effects. Intense rock n' roll I have yet to get sick of after many years of listening.

Free Music Review: This Album tells you more than the "Editorial Review"
Hit: 5 Stars

Jane's Addiction had the gall and attitude to release their very first EP as a live album. That alone should tell you where this disc is coming from. Unlike what the Editorial would make you think, theres nothing punk about Janes, they've always been the red, raw underbelly of a bizarre experiment with Glam Rock and Psychedelia, and there is no better way to hear them than this live, no coverups or touch ups gem.

I personally tend to HATE live discs as they sound like that bunch of garbage the Hendrix estate has been putting out that were no more than cheap bootlegs, but this disc is nothing of the sort. The first few times I heard this, I had no clue it was live, I thought they were adding crowd sounds to give it a feel, and there isn't much of that. The performance is phenominal, and the mix is amazingly consistent for live disc.

If you love Janes and you don't have this one yet, buy it now. You can kick yourself later.
