Free Music Notes for Nothing's ShockingFree Music Review: Before alternative was the norm Hit: 5 Stars
Before alternative was the norm, there was a little band called Jane's Addiction. They had a loyal following, but were not by any means the in music of their day. I've heard Jane's compared to several bands. Some mention Zeppelin. You can definitely hear Zeppelin's influence in the guitar work at times, but not so much in the vocals. I've also heard some mention the Chili Peppers, but I don't hear that at all. All I can gather is that this idea came about because Dave Navarro was the Chili Pepper's guitarest on their underappreciated One Hot Minute, although even on that album there's little similarity to what you'd hear from Jane's. I guess it doesn't really matter who you compare them to, this is a band that can really rock. This album contains "Jane Says" which is one of the band's best known songs, but also many other gems. In their first few albums, Jane's Addiction had a tendency to really get experimental. Sometimes it pays off, other times it doesn't, but it always makes for interesting listening. Still, some people may never be able to get into a song like "Ted Just Admit It" no matter how hard they try. Others will find it an odd work of genius in it's own way. This album was released in 1989, but sounds nothing like the music of that era. This band has always had a style of their own that transcends what you'd expect from a certain time period of music. They always just sound like Jane's Addiction, and nothing else.
Free Music Review: 1 record that will change your life forever... it's sick. Hit: 5 Stars
how do you describe the best studio cd from the best art-metal band ever???... what words would do it justice???... hmmm... if you've never jumped out of an airplane or surfed a 15 foot wave - it's ok... just listen to this cd loud, b/c it will have the same effect - pure adrenaline. you will feel like you just got shot out of a cannon..., and you will truly start to believe you can fly... it's sick... just be careful, b/c you need to know 2 things before listening to this: 1. it will take you about 5-10 full listens at high volume to "get it"... and 2. once you do, be careful... b/c you will start to sweat, shake, slobber, etc. when listening - i'm really not kidding - and old people will hate your guts for listening to this irreverant art, b/c it scares the hell out of them... i love music, and i appreciate all kinds of music, from mellow to hard... and this cd is probably my FAVORITE cd of ALL TIME... the reason being is, it does not sound "dated" even to this day... as a matter of fact - i really don't know of anything more current in this genre that could even hold a candle to this masterpiece.(Nirvana, Tool, Korn, Deftones, Rage, RHCP, Pumpkins, Pixies - I love em' all, and they are all great in their own way, but to me - they don't compare to Jane's) buy it - you will start to worship at the altar of Jane's.... these guys truly are way ahead of their time - it really will change your life. EPIC cd...
Free Music Review: own opinion Hit: 5 Stars
I enjoy the music on this CD very much. Perry Farrell applies vocals with serious lyrical content to heavy metal music. The first verse presented provokes more thought than an entire album from some bands: "wish i was ocean size / they cannot move you / no one tries / no one pulls you / out from your hole / like a tooth aching in a jawbone" I HAD A DAD confronts the question of God's involvement in our lives. "if you see my dad / tell him my brothers / all gone mad / they're beating on each other / i walked around / even tried to call / got that funny feeling / he's not there / at all ..." TED, JUST ADMIT IT presents television as the opium of the masses as Perry shouts the CD title "nothing's shocking". He even parodies his own rantings in STANDING IN THE SHOWER.. THINKING. The heavy metal platform is firmly established by David Navarro (g), Eric A (b) and Stephen Perkins (d). On MOUNTAIN SONG, they play like the best band from Kashmir singing songs about their black dog, but there is certainly no communication breakdown as Perry is coming down that mountain to announce, "everybody has their own opinion." The hit is JANE SAYS (no relation ;D). IMO, this is a very perceptive song about relationships -- one of the best. If you are interested in heavy metal music with serious lyrical content, or in a band which influenced the music of the 90's, this CD will interest you.
Free Music Review: Masters of art-rock never to be surpassed.Passion and power! Hit: 5 Stars
In my opinion, Janes Addiction is one of the best bands to emerge from Los Angeles, and definitely the best representation ever of art-rock. Their diverse combination of jazz, folk, shred rock and tribal music bridges so many gaps and so many cultures. This album is their most focused, innovative and passionate, a culmination of passionate ideas forged into one giant blast. Perry's vocals are primitive screamings and subtle insinuations. Dave's fantastic guitar playing will not be surpassed by any other art-rock band (they seem to look down upon ability?). His solos and use of effects is magnificent, firing off grating solos or constructing lush, beautiful and eerie atmospheres. Eric Avery needs more credit-his creative jazz lines bring melodic taste to the rhythm section. Stephen's drumming fuses tribal-jazz with sporadic rock fills and illuminates the underlying chaos that Janes barely keeps control of. I don't know how to describe this band other than I have to be careful where I listen to them, they usually make me start sweating, shaking and moving around because of their power. They're the total package-technical skill, accurate and innovative artistic themes and passionate showmanship. They're intelligent yet humble, rejecting the dark, elitist outlook perpetuated by most art-rockers. Call them what you want, Janes Addiction's simply rules.
Free Music Review: Ahead of its time Hit: 5 Stars
When I first got this album. I had no clue when it was released. When I went to go look up what year the album was released, I was shocked it was 1988. When you listen to Nothing's Shocking, you would honestly believe that it was ahead of its time, even this time. It has punk, it has funk, it has ska, it has such intoxicating rock you cannot help but to find yourself immersed in the unique vocals of Perry Farrell, the subtle basslines of Eric Avery, the surging and powerful guitar of Dave Navarro, and the commanding drumming of Stephen Perkins (who is probably the finest drummer in the history of rock behind Led Zeppelin's John Bonham).
It's an outstanding piece of work and still is today one of the greatest definitions to the term "alternative rock". Songs such as "Mountain Song", "Jane Says", and "Idiots Rule" illustrates an entire canvas Jane's Addiction crossed into in terms of musical styles and the ability to set not only an entire atmosphere, but an entire environment of powerful and deep sound that is nothing but futuristic and ambitious.
To really appreciate this album, you must look at music more than just candy for your ears, you must look at it as true art. Nothing's Shocking is an astounding piece of art.
