Free Music Notes for Nothing's ShockingFree Music Review: A Classic of My Generation Hit: 5 Stars
I can remember being 12 or 13 and reading about Jane's in Thrasher magazine and just knowing I had to have this album. Maybe it was the picture of Perry with his dreds swinging or maybe it was the picture of Dave looking so cool as he played the guitar, but as soon I could talk my mom into driving me to the store I bought this album and for the last 15 years it has been in constant rotation and one of my top ten of all time. "Summertime Rolls" is just an incredible song that always makes me think of those lazy summer days and "Had a Dad" is such a powerful song it makes me think every time I hear it. Who can't relate to "Standing in the Shower...Thinking." Please do yourself a favor and before you buy anything else buy this album. I know 15 years from now I will still be playing this one and I hope you are too.

Free Music Review: Ages exceptionally well Hit: 5 Stars
It's hard to believe that this album came out in 1988 and still holds its own as one of the most rock-out albums of all time. Even when standbys such as Mother Love Bone, Fugazi and even Guns 'n Roses sound a little too stale and cliched these days, "Nothing's Shocking" still carries tremendous power in it's super-charged rock sound. Perry Farrell's shrieking, startling vocals never fail to make me take notice.
From the opening bludgeon of "Up the Beach" to the staccato aggressiveness of "Pigs in Zen", this album never lets up. Even the cheeky "Thank You Boys" is delivered with impish delight that could only come from the mind of the half-mad, feral Farrell. Compare Dave Navarro's chops with anything on your local flaccid rock station and you'll see what I mean.
It's high time to treasure this gem all over again.
Free Music Review: To Close To call... Hit: 5 Stars
ok, i read the other reviews between this album and "Ritual...". every other review denounced the credibilty of the opposite album like one was made to replace the other. this made me sick. as a die hard Janes fan, i could not pick between "nothing shocking" or "ritual..." if my life was on the line. if you are thinking about which album to buy, it does not matter, if you do not like one, you will not like the other. both of the albums are worth while canidates for "desert island disks...", "best albums of the mellinnium..." and every other cliche catagory. do every true music fan the favor by buying one of these albums. if you truly listen to the lyrics, you will find deep emotions that will make you feel better about yourself. these albums have changed the way i look at life. go buy one
Free Music Review: A classic, seminal work Hit: 5 Stars
This is the band's best disc. I disagree strongly with the Amazon review that believes the best Jane's songs are on "Ritual..." While that disc is great in its own time and space, "Nothing's Shocking" is on a different plane altogether. This band was starving in every way at that time, and this disc captures that hunger. IMHO, there isn't a less-than-great song (save for the throw away "thank you ,boys")here. "Summertime Rolls" is a forgotten classic, a tune that I'm sure every purist loves. The raw intensity, creativity, rockmanship, and independence would never again be reached by this band. They were at their paramount here, the height of their powers. If it was the only thing they'd ever done, they would be one of rock's greatest bands. Fortunately for them, they also did "Ritual...", which cements forever them in rock royalty.
