Free Music Review: Finally!
Hit: 4 Stars

Having been a Janet Jackson fan for some time, I've begun to approach the release of a new cd with a certain amount of apathy. "Damita Jo" had maybe two memorable tracks. "20 y.o.," was only distinguished by the good people who manufacture cd's placing track marks throughout so we the listeners could distinguish when one song ended and another began. So "Discipline" comes along, and the reviews are not great. Ugh! But guess what? It is good. Really good.

The opening is a little creaky with a dated "voice activation" interlude, but then it kicks into high gear with "Feedback," Janet's best single since "All for You." The record moves forward with consistently dance driven tracks like "LUV," and "Rock with U." Despite critics griping about Janet trying to keep pace with the younger singers coming up behind her with racy lyrics (and honestly, some of her "girls out at the club" interludes seem silly for a 42y/o), she delivers a record that's totally contemporary and listenable. Her vocals often sound like a young Diana Ross; and where the sexuality felt really forced on her last two records, here it feels like fun.

Call it control, or discipline -- Janet proves she's still got it.

Free Music Review: Liked It...Didn't LOVE it...
Hit: 3 Stars

I kinda stopped listening to Janet after Velvet Rope...even though I thought the CD was a little dark it was interesting compared to her other stuff. That being said, I have liked a track here and there off her releases since then. But on this CD I LOVED four of the tracks enough to buy them on itunes.

Rock With U
Can't B Good (she sounds like Michale in the Human Nature days...love it)
What's Ur Name
Discipline

Oh and ummm just so ya know the "Daddy" thing has nothing to do with our fathers it's a term or endearment...you dig??

Free Music Review: Slight improvement
Hit: 3 Stars

Janet Jackson seems to have been stuck in a rut for a while. Her early albums all had strong themes: that of a young woman declaring her independence ("Control"), becoming conscious of the world around her ("Rhythm Nation"), coming of age sexually ("janet."), and facing her inner demons ("The Velvet Rope", my favorite Janet Jackson album). Her last few albums, strangely, seemed to have no real theme to them at all. This would have been okay if at least the music were evolving sonically, but that didn't really seem to be the case either. Despite working with new producers, Janet's music seemed to consist of the same uptempo dance grooves and breathy ballads.

Despite a title that both recalls "Control" and flirts with S&M, "Discipline" doesn't have much more strength thematically than her recent work, but at least the music seems to be moving in a new and interesting direction. The most successful songs are all uptempo tracks that have a futuristic edge to them: "Feedback", "Rock With U", "2nite" and "So Much Betta" all sizzle with electronic eroticism. Sadly, much of the rest of the album gets stuck in the standard Janet Jackson formula. The ballads all fall flat, sounding like the same breathy, overheated tune that she's been remaking over and over again since "Anytime, Anyplace" from "janet." And the interludes sandwiched between the songs, as usual, add nothing.

In order to truly break out of her musical rut, I'd like to see Janet reconnect with the fiesty, adventurous girl the world first fell in love with, and really try something new.

Free Music Review: Ms. Jackson is BACK!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Janet is back with this album, especailly since her last one sucked. The 4 first songs on the album are the best in my humble opinion.

Welcome back Ms.Jackson, nice to have the real Janet back.
